'Fundamentally, student success leads to economic benefit,' Stein said when summarizing the meeting, during which education leaders from early childhood to higher education shared their priorities.
'We’re all focused on, what do we need to do to ensure the people of North Carolina have what it takes to succeed in what is a very fast-changing, ever-changing economy?' Stein said.
The cabinet, established by the state legislature in 1992, is tasked with working across agencies and programs, and 'maintaining a strategic design for a continuum of education programs, from early childhood into the workforce,' according to the governor’s website."

Duke Sanford School of Public Policy: "State Superintendent Mo Green Visits Sanford"
"North Carolina Superintendent of Public Instruction Maurice “Mo” Green recently visited Sanford, where he met with faculty, staff, and students to share his vision for the future of public education in the state. Green, a double Duke graduate with degrees in political science, economics, and law, spoke with optimism and conviction about his five-year strategic plan, Achieving Educational Excellence, which outlines bold goals for making North Carolina’s public schools the best in the nation by 2030.
Green began by reflecting on his personal journey, including his years as an undergraduate and law student at Duke—when Terry Sanford, the school’s namesake, served as university president—and his service as president of Duke’s Black Student Alliance. He shared stories from his early legal career representing the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education, his leadership as superintendent of Guilford County Schools, and his time as executive director of the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation."

District Highlight: Durham Public Schools - ABC11: "‘It Actually Passed’: High School Students Create City Ordinance to Protect Renters in Durham"
"Renters in Durham are now have more protection against landlords that aren’t providing safe living conditions.
City officials said it wouldn’t have happened without Milo Graber and the Riverside High School Affordable Housing Club.
'Especially the fact that it affects my peers and other people in [Durham Public Schools] and my classmates, it made the problem feel so much more real to me like something that this needs to be addressed,' Graber said.
The group of teens brought their concerns to city council member Chelsea Cook. They collaborated to create the code amendment that now makes it unlawful to collect rent on properties with 'imminently dangerous' conditions."

"As part of his vision for improving North Carolina’s public schools, state superintendent Mo Green stopped by a Charlotte public school to outline his strategic plan — a plan Green hopes will make the state's schools the best in the nation by 2030.
Mo Green spoke at West Charlotte High School about the 'Achieving Educational Excellence' plan. Green said the plan has three major goals: high academic achievement, character development and having the best public schools in the country.
After taking office in January, Green set off on a listening tour known as 'Mo Wants to Know,' where he listened to community members, teachers and students about what is needed to improve public schools.
