Upcoming Professional Development for World Languages
CARLA Online Saturday Workshops
The Center for Advanced Research on Language Acquisition (CARLA) at the University of Minnesota is offering a variety of 3-hour online workshops for language educators on Saturdays:
- October 18: A Beginner's Guide to AI Tools for Language Teachers
- December 6: Developing and Implementing Language Objectives in Secondary Dual Language Content Classes
- February 28: Seals of Biliteracy: Preparing Students for Proficiency Assessments

All Things Immersion Professional Learning Webinar Series
The Southern Atlantic Language Collaborative (SALC) is providing the 2025–2026 All Things Immersion professional learning series, with two targeted strands throughout the year: one for administrators and program leaders, and one for dual language/immersion (DL/I) teachers.
The leadership strand, hosted by the Virginia Department of Education, is held at 10:00 am on the third Tuesday of each month throughout the school year, except November. These monthly sessions are focused on leadership topics, updates, and implementation support. Each session will include a featured topic and time for open discussion, and here are the topics and dates scheduled for 2025 - 2026 so far:
- October 21: Leadership in Action: Partnering for Success in Dual Language Family and Community Engagement
- December 16: From K–12 to College Credit: Designing Immersion Continuation Programs with Purpose
- January 20: Supporting the Global Educator: Research-Based Professional Development for International Dual Language Teachers
- February 17: Leading for Literacy: Planning for Biliteracy Development in Both One-way and Two-way Dual Language Programs
The instructional strand is hosted by our SALC partner at the South Carolina Department of Education and will be held on the last Tuesday of each month at 4:30 pm. Here are the upcoming topics with their broadcast dates:
- October 28: Integrating the Science of Reading in DL/I Teaching and Learning – Amplifying Impact
- November 25: WLARA Grant Writing Tips
- December 16: Literacy Strategies: Reading and Writing in the Target Language

ASLTA Webinar Series
The American Sign Language Teachers Association (ASLTA) is offering several webinars this fall featuring presenters from across the ASL field. The broadcasts are from 1:00 - 3:00 pm Eastern on the following days with these topics:

Power of Proficiency Webinar Series
The 2025 - 2026 World Languages Webinar Series, the Power of Proficiency, is your opportunity to take a deep dive into the updated, proficiency-based Standard Course of Study (SCoS) for World Languages.
The second broadcast, Power of Proficiency in Interpretive Communication, is on Wednesday, November 12, at 3:45 - 5:15 pm. The archived materials from the first broadcast, Overview of Proficiency in the State Standards, are now available for local use, including the recording and slides. These materials are posted in the Standards Implementation area under Professional Learning on the World Languages Resources Hub, along with an asynchronous option for those who weren't able to participate in the live webinar on September 10 but still want to earn credit and make progress towards completing the badge.

Upcoming Professional Development for Global Education
US Holocaust Museum Virtual Event
Registration is now open for the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum's upcoming event, Exploring Holocaust Literature in the Classroom, which will take place on Thursday, October 23, at 7:00 - 8:00 pm EST. During this free virtual program, experienced educators will discuss the importance of incorporating accurate historical context when teaching Holocaust literature in middle and high school classrooms. To provide an example and support the discussion, a copy of Lois Lowry’s Number the Stars will be mailed directly to program registrants (available for educators with a US or US territory mailing address).

International Education Week PD
NCDPI Global Education and the UNC Area Studies Centers are hosting a professional development session in Chapel Hill on Saturday, November 15, as part of International Education Week (IEW) celebrations. The theme is "Shaping the Future: Climate, Science, and Social Movements in a Changing World," and all K-12 educators across the state, regardless of content area or grade level, are invited to engage in this global learning session.

Opportunities for World Language Educators & Students
2026 Summer Program in Germany Applications
Due October 15
The American Association of Teachers of German (AATG) and Xperitas Summer Program is designed for rising and graduating seniors ages of 17-19 who would like to spend part of their summer exploring different German cities and experiencing a family stay with a German family. Students who have had two years of high school German (or equivalent) with an expected graduation date of 2026 or 2027 are eligible to apply. Additional details, including a video and timeline for applications, along with financial aid and scholarship opportunities, are posted on the AATG & Xperitas Summer Program for High School Seniors page.

K-16 Educator EU Study Tour Applications
Due October 31
The Center for European Studies (CES) at UNC Chapel Hill is hosting two study tours of Europe in the summer of 2026:
- Brussels Study Tour (June 14 - 20, 2026)
- Berlin Study Tour (June 21 - 27, 2026)
Both tours will provide K-16 educators from across the country with insider access to contemporary European politics, 30 professional development hours (per one week), and support integrating their tour experiences into classroom lessons. K-12 and community college educators from all disciplines are eligible to apply. Please go to the CES Educator Study Tours page for additional details and to apply.

National French Week 2025
November 4 - 10
The American Association of Teachers of French (AATF) is organizing the 22nd annual National French Week, a week-long celebration of all things French that will take place in schools, communities, and AATF chapters across the US from November 4-10, 2025. There are two contests available for students, including the National Francophone Culture Trivia Contest for students of French at the secondary and post-secondary levels and the National French Week Media Contest for middle and high school students.
