K-12 Math Standard Course of Study Standards Writing Team
The NCDPI K-12 Math team is excited to share that during the April 2, 2025, State Board of Education meeting, the Board voted to initiate the revision process for NC K-12 Math Standards. This process is guided by State Board policy as detailed in the.
During their October meeting, the State Board of Education approved changes to the standards revision timeline for all standards, including math, which would shift the timeline for installation of new standards to a two-year period. For the K-12 math standards process, this shift maintains the goal of adopting new standards during the summer of 2026. The installation of new standards will now occur over the course of the 2026-2027 and 2027-2028 school years. Implementation of the new K-12 Math standards would start with the 2028-2029 school year.
The K-12 Math Standards Writing Team began reviewing the recommendations from the last July with the goal of releasing a first draft of potential revisions to the K-12 Math standards later this Fall.

Southern Regional Education Board (SREB)
The HOPE: A Professional Development Model to Enhance Math Teacher Effectiveness project
The Southern Regional Education Board (SREB), with support from the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, is seeking 62 middle schools interested in closing mathematics achievement gaps for high needs students to partner on an innovative project. The HOPE: A Professional Development Model to Enhance Math Teacher Effectiveness project aims to increase student achievement and Math I readiness by improving the instructional skills of grades 7-8 math teachers.
Principals in participating schools will select up to four teachers in each grade level (grades 7-8) to engage in a professional learning model that will expand their instructional skills for teaching math. Teachers will begin by attending a three-day summer workshop on evidence-based practices in math instruction. One teacher in each school will serve as a teacher leader for this project, attending breakout sessions that build their capacity to support other math teachers in their school and district.
Stipend and Costs:
- The project is designed so that ALL costs are covered by the grant.
- Teachers will receive a stipend of up to $1,200 for events outside of their normal contract hours or days.
- Teacher leaders will participate in additional training each month and earn an additional $400 per year for a total of up to $1,600.
- Assistant principals will receive a stipend of up to $1,000 for the Summer Institute days and the monthly virtual PLCs.
The HOPE PD project is funded through an Education Innovation and Research grant, a program of the U.S. Department of Education.
