Honoring Excellence: NC State Board Recognizes ELD Award Recipient
At the October meeting of the North Carolina State Board of Education, members proudly honored this year’s English Language Development (ELD) Recognition Award (ERA) recipient, Ms. Elsie R. Maurice, teacher and department chair at South Academy of International Languages (SAIL) in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools.
Ms. Maurice has been recognized not only for her unwavering dedication to academic excellence but also for her remarkable leadership that strengthens the entire school community.
Together with the NC SBE, the ML/Title III Team celebrates Ms. Maurice’s well-deserved recognition and thanks the NC State Board of Education for uplifting the critical role of ESL educators in building bright futures for multilingual learners across the state.
The celebration was made even more special as Ms. Maurice was joined by her family members, and CMS Executive Director, Charlotte “Nadja” Trez, who were all present to share in the moment. Their presence highlighted the powerful ripple effect of her work—touching not only students and colleagues, but also family, community, and the broader educational field.
Congratulations to Elise Maurice!

Exploring Holocaust Literature
Virtual Event

The program will highlight instructional strategies that strengthen content acquisition and literacy skills. It will also explore resources based on the Museum’s primary source collection that promote students' understanding of how and why the Holocaust happened.
