CONSULTANT UPDATE: IDEA Consultant for Deaf and Hard of Hearing
The Office of Exceptional Children is pleased to announce that Neena Malosky is the new IDEA Consultant for Deaf/Hard of Hearing for Regions 1-4 (Northeast, Southeast, North Central, and Sandhills - view statewide map).
Neena brings 20 years experience as a Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in North Carolina serving in roles in both IDEA Part B and Part C. Please join the OEC in welcoming Neena to her new role. Neena can be reached via email at neena.malosky@dpi.nc.gov.
Canvas Course: Communicating with Children who are DeafBlind
A new asynchronous learning opportunity offered by NC DPI / NC DeafBlind Project is now available in NCEES.
Participants will develop a clear understanding of how children who are DeafBlind communicate. This module offers essential information, strategies, and detailed examples of how to:
- Develop and expand communication skills at all levels
- Provide effective access to the general education curriculum
- Create stronger connections with others
Each area will include a 30 to 40-minute lesson. Participants will earn .3 CEUs (3 hours) for completing the course and exploring all provided resources. Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) CEUs are available! Directions for obtaining these CEUs can be found within the course.

Spoken Language Facilitation Canvas Course

Description: This course is a beginner level exploration of auditory development, vocabulary development, linguistic development, and the numerous strategies (AV strategies) used to enhance language development for students who are deaf or hard of hearing using listening and spoken language. The course has numerous opportunities for reflection and application of learning, and is moderated by a Listening and Spoken Language Specialist.
This course is asynchronous and offers 20 hours of continuing education. The course runs on semester scheduling.
Vocabulary Instruction for Students Who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearing
