- A+ Schools of North Carolina celebrates 30 years of transforming schools through the arts
🎨 Join us at Ligon Middle School on Saturday, September 6th for the Comprehensive Arts Education Conference (CAEC). This day-long conference, in partnership with Ligon Middle School and proudly supported by the North Carolina Music Educators Association, serves as a statewide professional development opportunity for arts educators, district arts education leaders, teaching artists, arts integration specialists, and pre-service teachers from across North Carolina working in K-12 programs, independent studios, performing arts organizations, and higher education institutions.
Thanks to District Arts Education Leader, Jeremy Tucker and Wake County Public Schools, we have been able to secure Ligon Magnet Middle School. This campus, just minutes away from the original conference location, is home to outstanding Band, Strings, Theatre, Dance, and Visual Arts programs and offers a facility that will wonderfully meet the needs of this event. To ensure a lunch order, please register no later than Thursday, August 28th.
📚 The mission of this conference is to support the three essential components of the North Carolina Comprehensive Arts Education Model: Arts Education, Arts Integration, and Arts Exposure. Sessions will be centered on the four K-12 Arts Education Standards core strands of Connect 🤝, Create ✨, Present 🎭, and Respond 💬.
📅 Registration ends on September 5th, so don't delay!
📩 Contact Laura.stauderman@dpi.nc.gov if needing to pay with a school check for an alternate registration method, otherwise please use the Eventbrite link below.

Whether you’re choosing concert repertoire 🎤 or mapping out classroom songs 🎶, these guides will help you confidently meet objectives while focusing on what matters most: making music with your students. ❤️🎵
We’ll dive deeper into how to use these guides in an interactive session at the NC Comprehensive Arts Education Conference (CAEC) —don’t miss it! Make sure you’re registered so you can walk away with strategies, examples, and ready-to-use planning templates.

Welcome to the North Carolina Arts Council Arts Education Corner! The North Carolina Arts Council Arts Education Corner is a new monthly newsletter feature supporting arts educators statewide. Each month, we'll share valuable resources, highlight opportunities for teachers and students, and showcase the incredible work of schools, organizations and teaching artists who are making an impact in their communities.
In 1995, the Kenan Institute for the Arts, in Winston-Salem, launched a program to integrate the arts in every aspect of instruction in 25 diverse pre-kindergarten through twelfth-grade schools. The results were profoundly positive. The program expanded and transitioned, finally finding its home at the North Carolina Arts Council in 2010, where it remains.
Over the past three decades, A+ Schools of North Carolina has revolutionized education through the arts, helping educators create dynamic, engaging learning environments.
In the program’s early years, leaders across the A+ network developed the Eight A+ Essentials to support and guide schools in implementing this innovative model. These essentials form the foundational framework that shapes each school’s unique and creative culture. In addition to the arts, the other essential A+ ingredients are curriculum, experiential learning, enriched assessment, multiple learning pathways, collaboration, climate, and infrastructure.
A+ schools foster collaborative classrooms where arts integration and hands-on activities boost student engagement, improve retention, and enhance achievement. This environment also benefits teachers, leading to greater teacher retention and job satisfaction. A study by N.C. State University’s Friday Institute for Educational Innovation found that A+ teachers feel supported, empowered, and fulfilled.
A hallmark of the A+ model is its commitment to whole-school professional development, with experienced educators leading hands-on, research-based training. Schools in the A+ network receive ongoing resources and support. Each year in North Carolina, new schools join the network through a selective application process.
Congratulations to A+ Schools of North Carolina on three decades of innovation and inspiration. Here’s to a bright future!
North Carolina's Vision for Comprehensive Arts Education
In today's globally competitive world, innovative thinking and creativity are essential for all school children. High quality, standards-based instruction in the arts develops these skills and effectively engages, retains, and prepares future-ready students for graduation and success in an entrepreneurial economy. Dance, music, theatre arts, and visual arts, taught by licensed arts educators and integrated throughout the curriculum, are critical to North Carolina's 21st century education.
