K-12 Math Standard Course of Study Standards Writing Team
The NCDPI K-12 Math team is excited to share that during the April 2, 2025, State Board of Education meeting, the Board voted to initiate the revision process for NC K-12 Math Standards. This process is guided by State Board policy as detailed in the.
One of the first steps was establishing a Standards Writing Team(SWT), tasked with revising the current K-12 Math standards based on research and recommendations from the (DRC), which were compiled from feedback collected during the review phase. Working in grade-level/content area groups, the SWT considers possible revisions to K-12 Math when and where applicable.
Over 1,200 applications were submitted. We want to thank all of the applicants! The number of candidates speaks to the enthusiasm and passion in North Carolina for supporting math education.
The K-12 Math Standards Writing Team began reviewing the recommendations from the last month with the goal of releasing a first draft of possible revisions to the K-12 Math standards later this Fall.

North Carolina Mathematics Coaching Network
We are proud to announce the formation of the
North Carolina Mathematics Coaching Network (NCMCN)!
Research has shown that effective mathematics coaching supports the continuous development of mathematics teachers and impacts student learning. With this in mind, the NCMCN is being formed as a state wide professional learning community for coaches who support math teachers in grades K-12.
As a coach of mathematics teachers, you can participate in the NCMCN in two different ways.
- The first way is through a small group. This group is limited in size to allow for the intensive exploration of a coaching cycle. The group will meet six times throughout the school year and be asked to participate in activities between the sessions. It requires an application and supervisor approval, as all sessions must be attended. Click here to: Learn more about this small group professional learning.
- The second way will be through four open sessions throughout the year. Everyone is invited to attend according to your schedule. Sessions will be led by the NCDPI math team and university partners.

Participants will learn strategies to analyze newcomers’ literacy strengths and identify areas for growth. Through practical application, educators will gain tools for scaffolding instruction to ensure secondary newcomers can engage with grade-level content in reading and writing, promoting their academic success.
Participants will:
- Identify ways to create supportive and rigorous literacy learning environments for secondary newcomers in any program model
- Analyze secondary newcomers’ literacy strengths and areas of growth
- Examine approaches to scaffolding secondary newcomers’ engagement in grade-level content area literacy learning
