Apply Now for the M2-Si Educator Research Team!
The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) and the Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL) are calling for applications from both DLI and Non-DLI 3rd-5th grade educators who teach science in North Carolina public schools to serve as paid consultants on grant-funded research and development. The Center for Applied Linguistics is working in partnership with NCDPI to develop an assessment system – the Multilingual Multimodal Science Inventory (M2-Si) -- to support multilingual learners in science in third through fifth grades. Participants will receive a stipend of up to $3000 for participation in the research and professional activities, registration and travel costs to attend the 2025 North Carolina Science Teachers Association (NCSTA) Professional Development Institute (PDI) November 5-7, and a one-day orientation meeting on November 8. in Winston-Salem, NC.

Engaging Secondary Newcomers in Content Area Literacy
WIDA is bringing a new professional development opportunity to North Carolina! We are excited to offer 'Engaging Secondary Newcomers in Content Area Literacy.' In this 1-day workshop, educators will explore key factors that influence literacy development in content areas, focusing on how to engage students in content learning. Participants will learn strategies to analyze newcomers’ literacy strengths and identify areas for growth. Through practical application, educators will gain tools for scaffolding instruction to ensure secondary newcomers can engage with grade-level content in reading and writing, promoting their academic success.
Participants will:
- Identify ways to create supportive and rigorous literacy learning environments for secondary newcomers in any program model
- Analyze secondary newcomers’ literacy strengths and areas of growth
- Examine approaches to scaffolding secondary newcomers’ engagement in grade-level content area literacy learning
This workshop is designed for secondary English language development specialists and content teachers who aim to create supportive and rigorous learning environments for adolescent newcomers.

Access New Content in the External Implementation Guide: A Place for All Standards Resources
The Office of Academic Standards is excited to announce a new Canvas site to support the standards implementation process. The External Implementation Guide Canvas Page is a repository for all North Carolina Standard Course of Study (NCSOS) stakeholders. This repository provides a variety of resources for supporting administrators, educators, and parents during the implementation of the Standard Course of Study for each content area. The range of resources offers users an opportunity to determine their own specific needs and find materials that suit them.
