K-12 Math Standard Course of Study Standards Writing Team
NCDPI K-12 Math team is excited to share that during the April 2, 2025, State Board of Education meeting, the Board voted to initiate the revision process for NC K-12 Math Standards. This process is guided by State Board policy as detailed in the Internal Standards Manual.
One of the first steps is establishing a Standards Writing Team(SWT), tasked with revising the current K-12 Math standards based on research and recommendations from the Data Review Committee (DRC), which were compiled from feedback collected during the review phase. Working in grade-level/content area groups, the SWT considers possible revisions to K-12 Math when and where applicable.
Over 1,200 applications were submitted. The K-12 Math team and representatives from across NDPI have been reviewing completed applications.
Applicants will be notified of their selection status between Monday, June 16th, 2025, and Wednesday, July 2nd, 2025.
Please contact Dr. Charles Aiken (charles.aiken@dpi.nc.gov), Section Chief for Math, Science, and STEM, with any questions.
PRISM/Patterns Professional Learning Opportunity
The State Board approved for NCDPI to contract with Carnegie Learning and WestEd, to partner on the PRISM Patterns Professional Learning Impact Study, a grant awarded by the US Department of Education. This grant-funded opportunity will help build the capacity for high-quality math instruction. The study will focus on 4th grade teachers, providing professional development tied to the NC grade 4 math standards, emphasizing key fraction content standards to build conceptual understanding and readiness for teaching concepts and skills related to fractions.
The professional development includes up to $1700 in stipends for teachers, with no requirement to teach a specific math curriculum.
The teacher commitments would not start until October 1, 2025.
Please complete the interest form here, and we will follow up to schedule a call to share more information.
For more information, contact Dr. Charles Aiken (charles.aiken@dpi.nc.gov)

Stats&DataNet: Teachers Preparing Students for the Data Revolution
Free Online Professional Learning for K–12 Teachers to Support the Teaching of Data and Statistics
Organized by the Joint Committee of the American Statistical Association and National Council of Teachers of Mathematics
To be held virtually Tuesday, July 29, 2025, 11 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. ET, plus continued learning all year with community-building and virtual learning options.
Stats&DataNet is a year-long professional learning effort sponsored by the ASA and coordinated by Kaycie Maddox, Rebecca Nichols, Hollylynne Lee, and Gemma Mojica, with support from HI-RiSE: A Hub for Innovation and Research in Statistics Education at the North Carolina State University William and Ida Friday Institute for Educational Innovation.
The program provides K–12 teachers with an opportunity to discuss and apply the data analysis, data science, and statistical concepts embodied in the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Catalyzing Change books and American Statistical Association’s Guidelines for Assessment and Instruction in Statistics Education (GAISE) Pre-K–12 Curriculum Framework.
The program includes examining what students can be expected to do at the most basic level of data analysis understanding and what can be expected of them as their skills develop and experience broadens. Teachers will learn to use strategies and technology tools that support students’ learning and empower them to investigate questions using real-world data.
The workshop is FREE, though space is limited, and advance registration is required. Participants engaged throughout the workshop will also receive a certificate documenting 10 hours of professional learning that may be submitted to their local agency for CEUs.
