Registration Open for Fall Professional Development Opportunities at NCCAT
Join the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching (NCCAT) for professional development this September through December. NCCAT works with educators through hands-on learning experiences that directly support classroom success. Their residential programs provide educators with tools, strategies and support. Each week, teachers engage in content-rich instruction, collaborate with colleagues around the state, explore proven methodologies and receive coaching to implement new insights effectively.

74th Annual Conference on Exceptional Children Accepting Session Proposals
NCDPI's Office of Exceptional Children is now accepting session proposals for the 74th Annual Conference on Exceptional Children, November 19–21 in Greensboro.
This year’s theme—“50 Years of IDEA: Honoring the Past, Shaping the Future”—invites educators, administrators, and stakeholders to submit proposals for presentations that showcase evidence-based and promising practices supporting improved outcomes for students with disabilities.

District Highlight: Nash County Public Schools - Career and Technical Education (CTE) Mobile Career Exploration Lab Ribbon Cutting
Nash County Public Schools recently celebrated the official ribbon cutting for the district's brand-new Mobile Career Exploration Lab! The innovative lab brings hands-on career exploration straight to the students, featuring high-tech virtual simulators like an auto paint sprayer, forklift, welding and backhoe simulator. Plus, it includes a 3D printer, robotic arm, STEM activities and more!
We’re excited to see how this incredible resource will inspire Nash County students and help them discover and prepare for future career paths.

NC College Connect is Now Direct Admissions
NC College Connect is a groundbreaking initiative offering direct college admission to eligible high school seniors across the state for the 2025–2026 school year! Open to public high school seniors with a weighted GPA of 2.8 or higher who meet course requirements, students will be matched with colleges where they already qualify — no traditional application needed. Eligible students will be notified this fall.

EdNC: "Governor’s Educator Discovery Award Invests in the Professional Development of Educators"
"Gov. Josh Stein and the North Carolina Business Committee for Education (NCBCE) have awarded 10 educators across the state the Governor’s Educator Discovery Award.
'Our students benefit when their teachers prioritize their own continued education,' Stein said in a press release. 'I am proud to award these professional development grants to teachers who are striving for excellence, and I am excited to hear how they leverage this additional education in the classroom.'
NCBCE is a business-led, education nonprofit that operates out of the Office of the Governor. The award includes a stipend of up to $1,000 for professional development, funded by NCBCE member companies.
The 2024 winners were from the twelfth and thirteenth cycles of teachers to receive the award since its inception in 2019."

High School Teams from Across North Carolina Amaze in Ready, Set, App! Competition
Congratulations to the winners of the sixth annual Ready, Set, App! Competition! 🎉 This year, Ready, Set, App! set participation records with 107 teams from across 30 counties registering to participate, engaging 425 students.
Meet this year’s winning teams:
🥇 1st Place – ASLephant - Mallard Creek High (Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools)
- Created an app to teach users about the foundations of American Sign Language (ASL) through a gamified leveling system, which features unique quizzes and flashcards.
🥈 2nd Place – Color Catch - North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics
- Created an app that empowers individuals with color blindness by enabling them to easily identify the colors of everyday objects.
🥉 3rd Place – ApneaAid - Enloe High (Wake County Public School System)
- Created an AI-powered app that detects sleep apnea risk using a phone’s microphone and provides unique recommendations and trends to improve sleep quality.
The competition is hosted by the North Carolina Business Committee for Education and sponsored by Lenovo. The contest challenges student teams to design and develop an android mobile application to solve a problem in their school or community.

NC SUN Meals Programs Offer Free Food, Fitness, Farm to Summer, Fun for Youth
"More than 900,000 North Carolina students rely on the nutritious meals and snacks served during the school year through the School Breakfast, School Lunch and Afterschool Snack Programs. When school is out, North Carolina SUN Programs provide nutritious meals at no cost for youth ages 18 and under.
Through SUN Meals Programs, youth 18 and under can enjoy meals together at school and community sites. SUN Meals help youth get the nutrition they need all summer long and enjoy time with other kids and teens. In some rural areas, SUN Meals To-Go may be available for pick-up or delivery. Also called non-congregate meals, SUN Meals To-Go sponsors may provide multiple days of meals at a time to youth 18 and under during the summer break.

Fifteen Schools Selected to Launch $25 Million School Improvement Initiative
"Fifteen North Carolina middle schools have been selected to participate in the Golden LEAF Schools Initiative, a five-year, $25 million program made possible by funding from the Golden LEAF Foundation. The initiative aims to improve school performance through innovative educational strategies with a focus on mathematics and career development. Golden LEAF Schools is supported by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI), in partnership with the Golden LEAF Foundation and Marzano Resources.
'The Golden LEAF Schools Initiative is a powerful first step toward our goal of ensuring that North Carolina’s public schools are the best in the nation,' said North Carolina State Superintendent Maurice 'Mo' Green. 'By investing in middle school math instruction – especially in our rural and economically challenged communities – we are building a foundation that prepares every student for college, careers and lifelong community engagement.'”
