North State Journal: "K-3 Reading Assessments Show Growth"
"Midyear literacy assessment results presented at the May meeting of the North Carolina State Board of Education show continued improvement for K-3 students over last fallâs results.
The results were compiled by Amy Rhyne, the Department of Public Instructionâs senior director of the Office of Early Learning, and presented by board member Jill Camnitz, who co-chairs the Student Learning and Achievement Committee.
'We see substantial kindergarten growth from the beginning of the year to the middle of the year and moderate growth in grades 1 and 2 with third grade holding steady,' Camnitz said. 'In all grades, North Carolina exceeded the national numbers. Subgroups outperformed or at least equal the national data.'â

Learning Happens Here Field Trip Fund
The "Learning Happens Here Field Trip Fund" is a program of the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources (DNCR), in partnership with PBS North Carolina (PBS NC), that provides reimbursements to public schools throughout North Carolina to engage in enriching, experiential field trips at DNCR's 100+ locations around the state!
The Learning Happens Here Field Trip Fund will help ensure students from all regions of the state have the opportunity to engage in memorable educational experiences while cultivating a deeper understanding and appreciation of North Carolinaâs rich history, culture, arts, science and natural resources. By providing financial support through reimbursements for schools to visit DNCR locations around the state, the Learning Happens Here Field Trip Fund empowers students to connect to what it means to live in and love North Carolina, ultimately helping to cultivate our stateâs future leaders and innovators.

WCTI: "Governor Stein Forms Teacher Advisory Committee to Boost North Carolina Education"
"On Tuesday, May 6, Governor Josh Stein signed an executive order to establish the Governor's Teacher Advisory Committee during National Teacher Appreciation Day. Officials say the Committee will advise the Governor on concerns related to education and serve as education ambassadors throughout the state.
Christian Martin, HJ MacDonald Middle School, Rachel Candaso (Chair), Wellcome Middle School, Elyse Cannon McRae, South Central High School, and Marisha Merchant, White Oak High School, were among those selected to be on the committee."

453 NC Schools Receive Recognition for Extraordinary Support of Military Students, Families
"North Carolina has long been home to a large population of active duty, guard, reserve and veteran armed service members. In recognition of the stateâs rich military history, the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) is pleased to recognize hundreds of schools as part of its Purple Star Award Designation initiative which first launched in the 2019-20 school year.
For the 2024-25 school year, 453 schools, including twelve charter schools, received Purple Star recognition, an increase of 59 schools versus last yearâs total awardees. In all, 31 districts across North Carolina are represented and 65 schools are first time awardees.
The award recipients were honored at a ceremony today that included remarks from State Superintendent of Public Instruction Maurice 'Mo' Green and Brigadier General Charles W. Morrison, Assistant Adjutant General - Maneuver, NC National Guard."
