EdNC - Mebane Rash | April 30, 2025: Stein, Hunt, and Green urge Congress to maintain funding for Head Start - “Rural areas would be particularly hard-hit,” says the letter, “where Head Start is often one of the only high-quality child care options for low-income families. In 22 rural counties, Head Start accounts for 20 percent or more of all licensed child care slots.”
WRAL NEWS - Emily Walkenhorst | April 29, 2025: NC drops in rankings of average teacher pay, improves in beginning teacher pay, new report says - The state's teachers still earn less than the national average. What data shows about teacher buying power and what groups think needs to change. BestNC, an education nonprofit comprised of members of the state's business community, found that the average teacher pay in 2023-24 had less buying power than average pay even just a few years ago, per its annual school statistics report released this week. Spectrum News 1 - Jenna Rae Gaertner | April 28, 2025: Western North Carolina schools look for more funding after Helene - Due to the destruction from Helene, local governments in western North Carolina don’t have the funds to support their school systems.
EdNC - Ben Rappaport | April 28, 2025: Robeson County schools abruptly lose $14.6 million in federal funding - Three other North Carolina school districts—Halifax, Lenoir and Richmond counties—are also affected by the abrupt cuts to the Education Stabilization Fund created in 2020. Together, those districts are set to lose more than $1.1 million.

News & Observer - T. Keung Hui | April 4, 2025: NC is redesigning school math and reading standards. But lawmakers want their say. - The State Board of Education gave permission on Thursday for the state Department of Public Instruction to develop new K-12 math standards after having given approval last May to develop new K-12 English language arts standards.
WRAL - Emily Walkenhorst, Brian Murphy and Laura Leslie | April 29, 2025: NC House advances bill that would let districts set school-year start dates - House Bill 121 would eliminate restrictions on when school boards can set their start and end dates. That would effectively eliminate the state’s 2004 school calendar law that required schools to start school no later than the Monday closest to Aug. 26 and end school no later than the Friday closest to June 11.

The NCBCE AI Fellows program, in partnership with Google.org, will generate a network of exceptional NC educators to serve as artificial intelligence (AI) leaders and mentors in their school communities. Through this experience, Fellows will implement advanced computer science and AI pedagogical strategies, introduce the latest in technological resources, and develop innovative curriculum and extracurricular activities. Collectively, these methods are poised to elevate AI education in North Carolina while creating expanded learning opportunities for students, sparking their interest and engagement with AI, and preparing them for high-demand careers.
- Qualified candidates will be interviewed over the summer and 20 Fellows will be selected late August/early September 2025.
- Applications will be accepted until May 16, 2025.
