Welcome to the North Carolina Arts Council Arts Education Corner! The North Carolina Arts Council Arts Education Corner is a new monthly newsletter feature supporting arts educators statewide. Each month, we'll share valuable resources, highlight opportunities for teachers and students, and showcase the incredible work of schools, organizations and teaching artists who are making an impact in their communities.
Earth Day has been celebrated across the country and the globe for over 50 years. Here are four ways to bring environmental stewardship into the classroom.
1. Find inspiration from North Carolina artists who use recycled materials like Bryant Holsenbeck. She creates sculptures and installations from discarded materials and teaches her techniques in workshops around the state and internationally. Recently she worked with students at Greenfields Academy in Wilson to make woven sea turtles, and with students at Green Level High School in Cary to make 140 jellyfish out of marine debris. That project, titled Smack II, exhibited in the Glow Festival in Cary this winter. Bringing teaching artists who use recycled materials into the classroom for hands-on learning helps students see that trash can have a second life as art.
2. Visit Vollis Simpson Whirligig Park & Museum, in Wilson, to experience massive kinetic sculptures utilizing discarded materials. Through upcycled farm equipment, North Carolinian Vollis Simpson combined art and science to create enchanting giant sculptures. A field trip to the park offers a great opportunity to encourage students to see materials in a new light and to learn STEM curriculum. Available upon request, teachers can utilize curriculum park-specific curriculum activities created in partnership with A+ Schools of North Carolina. The park was recently placed on the North Carolina Science Trail!
