Eleven years after the release of the National Arts Standards in 2014, the National Coalition for Arts Standards (NCAS) will launch a thorough survey to collect data on the National Standards for dance, media arts, music, theatre, and visual arts. The National Arts Standards have played and continue to play an integral role in improving and supporting arts education for America's students. With nearly all states having revised the state’s arts education standards since 2014, this review process will help us gather the latest knowledge, research, and best practices while addressing the evolving needs of the nation’s students and ensure that the arts remain central to a well-rounded education.
To best inform decision-making and to ensure transparency in the review, all arts educators, thought partners, education and arts organizations, and stakeholders with interests in arts education are asked to provide critical feedback to guide the process.
Your participation is vital to shaping the future of arts education. Please complete the public input survey by May 16, 2025. Additional information and ways to be involved will be shared in the coming months. If you have any questions, please email contact@nationalartsstandards.org.

Welcome to the North Carolina Arts Council Arts Education Corner! The North Carolina Arts Council Arts Education Corner is a new monthly newsletter feature supporting arts educators statewide. Each month, we'll share valuable resources, highlight opportunities for teachers and students, and showcase the incredible work of schools, organizations and teaching artists who are making an impact in their communities.
Celebrate with us as we raise awareness of the important role the arts play in the lives of students.
This story, shared by Atlantic Dance Company, encapsulates the importance of the arts in children's lives. The company received a cARTwheels grant to bring the Raleigh-based Black Box Dance Theatre into a Jones County public school classroom.
This is the story of the impact of the Black Box Dance Theatre program. One of the participants was a boy with Autism from a Jones County school. He is in the fifth grade and during the first days of the workshops with Black Box Dance Theatre, he was all over the place but he was curious. He asked a lot of questions and wanted to know how to do things. He wanted them to repeat things so he could get it and was trying to make sure that all of the kids were together--that they knew what they were doing. According to the teacher, all of this transferred into the classroom for him. His teacher said as the week went on, he settled down more. He was able to focus more. He would be humming and doing his work. When asked what he was humming, he said he was memorizing the songs, so he could practice. This experience not just impacted that week but has brought to life a new coping skill. This student, his teacher, and future teachers can take this information and harness it to improve his life.
