NCDPI
Spring 2025 Math Content & Pedagogy Series Schedule
Teachers, teacher leaders, instructional coaches, district staff, and administrators are offered professional learning opportunities to engage in mathematics content and effective teaching practices. Sessions are focused on elementary, middle, and high school mathematics content and pedagogy aligned to the NC mathematics standard course of study while highlighting practitioners in the field. These sessions are designed to be interactive and engaging.
Participants can earn 2 contact hours per session. Each session meets virtually for 90 minutes with a 30-minute asynchronous reflection time to provide feedback. Sessions will be recorded; however, participants will only receive contact hours when participating in real-time sessions.
The information and resources shared are both beneficial and useful. Don't miss this opportunity and please share with teachers and leaders in your area!

Growing Success for Multilingual Learners and The Standards Academy Summer Conference
Two Conferences - One Powerful Opportunity!
Empowering Educators and Elevating Outcomes: Growing Success for MLs and The Standards Academy
All educators of Multilingual Learners (MLs) are invited to participate in the Growing Success for MLs Summer Conference. This summer's conference provides educators with an opportunity to explore innovative ELD resources and broaden their understanding of effective practices for supporting MLs. Attendees will have the chance to exchange ideas on how to enhance instruction, implement research-based teaching strategies, and create inclusive learning environments that foster the academic and social success of MLs.
The Office of Teaching and Learning receives many requests from the field for standards-based professional development. We heard you and responded by providing PSUs with this Standards Academy. During the NCSCOS content area sessions, participants will be guided through all content area standards, from unpacking to instructional practices. These sessions aim to provide new and veteran educators with a deeper understanding of the Standard Course of Study. In addition, sessions will be provided pertaining to Exceptional Children, Honors Level Coursework, Digital Teaching and Learning, and CTE.

PRISM/Patterns Professional Learning Opportunity
The State Board approved for NCDPI to contract with Carnegie Learning and WestEd, to partner on the PRISM Patterns Professional Learning Impact Study, a grant awarded by the US Department of Education. This grant-funded opportunity will help build the capacity for high-quality math instruction. The study will focus on 4th grade teachers, providing professional development tied to the NC grade 4 math standards, emphasizing key fraction content standards to build conceptual understanding and readiness for teaching concepts and skills related to fractions.
The professional development includes up to $1700 in stipends for teachers, with no requirement to teach a specific math curriculum.
The teacher commitments would not start until October 1, 2025.

Summer 2025 Institute for Data Science Teaching
June 23-26, 2025
Attention teachers!
Join the Data Science Summer Institute at NCSSM-Morganton from June 23-26, 2025.
This FREE workshop, co-organized by NCSSM and the InSTEP project at NC State, is designed for middle school, high school, and community college teachers of all experience levels who are interested in learning how to teach introductory data science concepts. Participants will engage in interactive, hands-on sessions, collect data, and explore data science tools like CODAP and spreadsheets.
The institute will offer two groups,
- Novice track for those new to data science and
- Experienced track for those looking to delve deeper into programming tools like Python and R.
Travel stipends and lodging are provided thanks to generous support from Google.org and the InSTEP project.

We are very excited to introduce the Amplifying Voices Podcast series, brought to you by the NC2ML Visions Project 9-12 Co-design Team! The podcast aims to bring together NC teachers, teacher leaders, and mathematics education researchers to discuss the realities of supporting students’ engagement in mathematics discourse. Each episode will be hosted by Emily Hare (Guilford County Schools), Margaret Borden (NC State), and Josh Griffin (Franklin County Schools) who bring their fun personalities along with their knowledge of NC students, teachers, leadership, and policy to every conversation.

7th Grade AQ-IQ Contest
Each year the North Carolina Division of Air Quality invites 7th grade students to participate in the AQ-IQ Contest which combines S.T.E.A.M. education and project-based learning with student creativity to teach air pollution science to students across the state. The contest gives these students an opportunity to learn about air quality and think about solutions to air pollution and put THEM in charge of creating a project to educate others about an air quality problem.
The AQ-IQ contest allows students to explore their interests and strengths while engaging with the material and learning about air quality. Students are asked to think creatively while designing their projects. Past projects have been posters, videos, Minecraft creations, games, and artistic projects off all sorts!
Winners will be recognized during the summer of 2025 at a REGIONAL and STATEWIDE level and will receive AWESOME prizes!

NC Governor's School Summer Opportunity

NCDPI is specifically seeking creative, engaging math teachers. This is an opportunity to play a role in shaping a life-changing summer for these amazing students. More information can be found on the employment page of our Governor’s School Website. Teachers are needed for the Governor’s School East campus, hosted by Meredith College.
The Governor’s School will take place June 22-July 19, with faculty arriving on June 16 to begin orientation. We are currently reviewing applications and conducting interviews. If you have questions regarding any openings, reach out to us at ncgovschool@dpi.nc.gov.

The K-12 Mathematics Standards Revision process is currently in the Review phase.
- The Math Data Review Committee (DRC) has begun the process of examining all of the stakeholder data collected in the Fall.
- The K-12 Math Team anticipates presenting to the State Board of Education at their April Meeting to request permission to start the revision process
NC K-12 Math Standards Resource Hub
The NCDPI K-12 Mathematics team has created a repository to provide a variety of resources for supporting school leaders, administrators, educators, and parents/caregivers. The NC K-12 Math Standards Resource Hub houses the standards, communications, and recommended resources related to the implementation of the North Carolina K-12 Math Standard Course of Study (NCSCOS).
The hub includes:
- K-12 standards and unpacking documents
- Previous PD presentations, recordings, and resources
- At Home Resource Guides for parent/guardians
- Math Options Chart aligned to post graduation plans
- STEM Content Integration
Math educators are encouraged to browse, reference, download, share, discuss, and adapt resources.

On Tuesday, February 18, 2025, the NCDPI K-12 Mathematics team, with special guests, NCDPI Testing and Accountability specialists and NC2ML representatives, held an office hour for NC math school and district leaders. This office hour featured information, opportunities, and resources from all groups as well as updates from NCDPI Mathematics team.
