The North Carolina Center for Safer Schools (CFSS) serves to promote safe learning environments for North Carolina K-12 schools. Center staff are available to provide trainings, guidance, resources, and technical assistance upon request for school faculty and staff, and those working with children and adolescents.

From the Executive Director

Welcome back for the second half of the 2024-2025 school year! This is an abbreviated newsletter, as this is a time of change for the Center for Safer Schools.

Session Law 2024-57/Senate Bill 382 was enacted on 11 December 2024, which transfers the Center for Safer Schools from the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction to the State Bureau of Investigation.

Our new location will be at the SBI campus at 3320 Garner Road, Raleigh, NC 27610. Staff email addresses and the CFSS website eventually will reflect the ncsbi.gov domain.

As we continue to work with NC DPI, we are committed in our efforts to serve North Carolina public school units. We will still offer the training, technical assistance and resources that we always have. However, with our supporting agency, NC SBI, we will now be able to provide you even more resources in safety.

Lastly let’s stay connected. Our main email address (cfss@dpi.nc.gov) will be active during the transition period. Our social media channels (Facebook, Instagram and X) will stay the same, and I encourage everyone to follow us to stay up to date. New to the CFSS social media presence is our YouTube channel, @NCCenterforSaferSchools. Click here for my January video message, where I talk about National Human Trafficking Prevention Month.

Watch your email for our February 2025 Newsletter, which will be released the last week of January. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we continue to work together to help keep our schools safer.

Executive Director Tours

Center for Safer Schools Executive Director Karen W. Fairley will resume tours of North Carolina school districts and charter schools in late January. She would like to see anything you want to showcase regarding school safety. For school districts, this includes stops at an elementary school, a middle school and a high school. She also would like to take time to talk with a small group of your students.

To schedule a tour, send an email to cfss@dpi.nc.gov. Thank you for your patience as she does what she can to get to as many public school units as possible.
