NC schools and teachers! You know those barriers you face when trying to take a field trip, like bus availability, transportation costs, affordability, etc.? Last week, Governor Roy Cooper and Secretary Reid Wilson announced the Learning Happens Here Field Trip Fund, managed by the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources (DNCR)! This program provides financial support for public schools to experience enriching field trips at DNCR’s 100+ locations statewide. Funded by the State of North Carolina and managed in partnership with PBS North Carolina, this initiative ensures students have access to hands-on learning beyond the classroom. NEW THIS YEAR: Central Carolina AOSA is now providing satellite locations for those who want to attend without having to travel a long way to do so! For the October workshop, we will have two satellite campuses available at Appalachian State University (Mountain Region) and Rocky Point Elementary (Coastal Region). Our main campus will continue to be Durham Academy (Central Region).
We’re excited to announce that registration for Poetry Out Loud 2024-2025 is now open! Poetry Out Loud is a national arts education program that encourages students to engage deeply with poetry, fostering public speaking skills, self-confidence, and a love for literary expression.
How It Works:
The journey begins at the local level with registered school or organizational competitions. Top students advance to Regional contests, then State competitions, and finally, the National competition in Washington, DC, on May 5-7, 2025. Our state winner will represent North Carolina on a national stage!
The North Carolina Arts Council is proud to partner with Children’s Theatre of Charlotte, the North Carolina State Coordinator for Poetry Out Loud, for a second year. The State Finals will take place at ImaginOn in Charlotte on March 8, 2025.

North Carolina's Vision for Comprehensive Arts Education
In today's globally competitive world, innovative thinking and creativity are essential for all school children. High quality, standards-based instruction in the arts develops these skills and effectively engages, retains, and prepares future-ready students for graduation and success in an entrepreneurial economy. Dance, music, theatre arts, and visual arts, taught by licensed arts educators and integrated throughout the curriculum, are critical to North Carolina's 21st century education.
