ELA Standard Course of Study (SCOS) Update: All Stakeholder Standard-by-Standard Survey
Survey Closes January 9, 2025
State Board of Education policy specifies that the NC Department of Public Instruction will formally collect feedback on the current standards from educators, administrators, parents, students, institutions of higher education, business/industry representatives, national organizations, and other education agencies. The purpose of this survey is to obtain input from educators and stakeholders familiar with the English Language Arts Standard Course of Study in order to inform revision decisions.
This process began with a review phase, conducted during the 2023- 2024 school year. The review phase included gathering relevant research and analyzing data obtained through surveys, interviews, and focus groups. The data obtained was compiled by the NCDPI Office of Learning Recovery (OLR) and provided to the ELA Data Review Committee (DRC) for review and analysis.
The DRC completed a formal report summarizing the data and trends within the feedback and making recommendations for changes. The report was provided to the ELA Standards Writing Team (SWT) as the basis to start the revision process for the 2024 - 2025 school year. The SWT launched their work in July 2024. Draft 1 is now released for public review and feedback using this survey.
The English Language Arts team in the Office of Academic Standards requests your thoughtful input and comments on Draft 1 of the proposed K-12 English Language Arts academic standards to inform any additional revisions, which may include changes, clarifications, additions, deletions, or replacements to the draft standards and their objectives.
Any individual who wishes to provide input on the English Language Arts SCOS may complete this survey. This survey is estimated to take about 10-20 minutes to complete, depending on the grade-level you choose to review, and should be completed in one sitting. If you would like to give feedback on more than grade-level, you can return and submit another survey. Please use the Survey Companion Document to assist you when providing feedback on Draft 1.

New: Network for Multilingual Education!
The Strategies and Innovations for Multilingual Learner Success (or ML Success) project was conducted as a partnership between UNCG, NCDPI and WIDA. Building upon findings and recommendations from the project, the Network for Multilingual Education has been established to offer continued networked learning opportunities among educators promoting multilingual education.
The Network offers updated resources for educators promoting multilingual education through efforts such as English as a Second Language (ESL), Dual Language/Immersion (DL/I), content-based language instruction, and multilingual family engagement.
Educator Champions promoting multilingual education are invited to share your professional background, select your areas of excellence based on the North Carolina Professional Teaching Standards and TESOL Standards, and submit artifacts that can be shared with other educators to further expand excellence in multilingual education.
