Upcoming Professional Learning on the New Standards
Standards Update Webinar Series
The 2024-2025 World Languages Standards Update Webinar Series continues in 2025 with broadcasts about the new standards on these Wednesday afternoons from 4:00-5:15 pm:
- Webinar #3: Instructional Support Tools & Resources - January 8
- Webinar #4: Onward to Initial Implementation - May 7
Following each live broadcast of the webinars in this series, the archived materials (recording, slide deck, handouts, and links) are posted in the Standards Installation area of the World Languages Resources Hub for local use in PLCs, PLTs, or other professional learning organized by district or charter school coordinators, department heads, curriculum directors, etc.
There are also asynchronous options available for individuals who missed the webinar and want to catch up on the content, as well as earn a Certificate of Completion for 1 contact hour or 0.1 CEU.
Please share the 2024-2025 World Languages Standards Update Webinar Series flyer (pictured below) at go.ncdpi.gov/WLwebinars24-25, to register for upcoming broadcasts or access the asynchronous option via a Google form from previous webinars.
K-20 World Language Leaders Meetings
The 2024-2025 World Language Leaders meetings also continue in the new year. There are two meetings coming up on February 12 and April 2, which are Wednesdays, and they will be held virtually from 9:00 am-12:00 pm.
It would be ideal to have one representative attend from every Public School Unit (PSU), or district and charter school, so that individual can be part of the policy and planning conversations statewide and then take information back for their PLCs, department meetings, or other local convenings. Any K-12 World Language leader (central office personnel, building or department head, or other educator designated to gather information about World Language programs and standards) can participate as their PSU's representative.
Please click on the K-20 World Language Leaders Meetings flyer below, which is housed in Canva, to submit your registration for the upcoming meetings and/or access the slides and recordings from past meetings. The flyer can also be accessed at go.ncdpi.gov/K-20WLLmeetings.
Standards Implementation Train-the-Trainer Regional Workshops
The World Language Standards Implementation Workshops will be in-person and offered in each of the eight regions of the state (see map below) from late February - early April, 2025. These workshops are designed as a train-the-trainer series that will consist of a morning session (8:30-11:30 am) focused on the new standards and the updated support tools for their implementation, and an afternoon session (12:30-3:30 pm) dedicated to planning with the new standards, networking with other teachers, coaches, administrators, etc. in the region, and integrating the Literacy Instruction Standards (LIS) into World Language courses and programs.
Notes:
-
Registration is flexible and will allow participants to indicate whether they are signing up for the 6-hour option with both sessions or one of the 3-hour sessions (morning or afternoon) depending on their needs.
-
There are 50 seats at each location to ensure that every Public School Unit (PSU), or district and charter school, can send one (1) representative as their trainer. If your PSU representative would like to attend in a different region due to the date or location, please submit those details on the regional registration form where they would like to participate. A waiting list will be created to accommodate these transfer requests as space is available.
Please use the registration forms below, which are also posted on the the Standards Installation page of the World Languages Resources Hub, to sign up or pass this information to your PSU's representative for them to register and add the date and tentative location to their calendars.
Save the Dates for Summer 2025
NCDPI's Office of Academic Standards is combining two conferences into one event during the Summer of 2025 that will be offered in two locations, as noted on the flyer below. Please read the details about each conference, and know that the goal is for participants to be able to sign up for sessions from both.
Standards Academy
The annual Standards Academy will feature a K-12 World Languages session focused on the initial implementation of the 2024 SCoS for World Languages, which will begin in the 2025-2026 school year. Planning is underway for an additional World Languages session that will delve into offering honors options for Level I and Level II courses using the guidance and tools from the Office of Advanced Learning and Gifted Education.
Growing Success for MLs Conference
The NCDPI ML/Title III team invites all educators to submit proposals for the 2025 Growing Success for MLs Conference. Without question, the 2024 conference was a huge success because of our presenters! Sharing your "boots on the ground" expertise inspires fellow educators to create more effective learning environments for multilingual learners. We encourage you to submit your proposals offering practical strategies, innovative ideas, and proven methods for enhancing the educational experience of ML students, especially who are building proficiency in languages through dual language/immersion (DL/I) and/or heritage language programs.
Proposals can be submitted using the online form through March 1, 2025.

Surveys Open for ELA Standards Revision Draft 1
Submit by January 9
State Board of Education policy specifies that the NC Department of Public Instruction will formally collect feedback on the current standards from educators, administrators, parents, students, institutions of higher education, business/industry representatives, national organizations, and other education agencies. The purpose of this survey is to obtain input from educators and stakeholders familiar with the English Language Arts Standard Course of Study in order to inform revision decisions.
The English Language Arts team in the Office of Academic Standards requests your thoughtful input and comments on Draft 1 of the proposed K-12 English Language Arts academic standards to inform any additional revisions, which may include changes, clarifications, additions, deletions, or replacements to the draft standards and their objectives.
Any individual who wishes to provide input on the English Language Arts SCOS may complete this survey. This survey is estimated to take about 10-20 minutes to complete, depending on the grade-level you choose to review using the buttons below, and should be completed in one sitting. If you would like to give feedback on more than grade-level, you can return and submit another survey.
Please use the Survey Companion Document to assist you when providing feedback on Draft 1.
