Monthly Standards Update
In May 2024, the NCDPI ELA Team began revision of the current 2017 ELA Standard Course of Study (SCOS). In an effort to keep stakeholders informed during the Revision Phase, the NCDPI ELA Team will provide monthly standards updates that contain the latest announcements and current news regarding the ELA SCOS.
These updates will be sent the first Friday of every month.*
*Please note: To streamline communications regarding the release of Draft 1 of the Revised ELA SCOS, this December 2024 First Friday has been sent a day early.
PSU Standard-by-Standard Survey
Survey Closes January 9, 2025
State Board of Education policy specifies that the NC Department of Public Instruction will formally collect feedback on the current standards from educators, administrators, parents, students, institutions of higher education, business/industry representatives, national organizations, and other education agencies. The purpose of this survey is to obtain input from educators and stakeholders familiar with the English Language Arts Standard Course of Study in order to inform revision decisions.
This process began with a review phase, conducted during the 2023-2024 school year. The review phase included gathering relevant research and analyzing data obtained through surveys, interviews, and focus groups. The data obtained was compiled by the NCDPI Office of Learning Recovery (OLR) and provided to the ELA Data Review Committee (DRC) for review and analysis.
The DRC completed a formal report summarizing the data and trends within the feedback and making recommendations for changes. The report was provided to the ELA Standards Writing Team (SWT) as the basis to start the revision process for the 2024 - 2025 school year. The SWT launched their work in July 2024. Draft 1 is now released for public review and feedback using this survey.
The English Language Arts team in the Office of Academic Standards requests your thoughtful input and comments on Draft 1 of the proposed K-12 English Language Arts academic standards to inform any additional revisions, which may include changes, clarifications, additions, deletions, or replacements to the draft standards and their objectives.
Please convene a PSU review team consisting of a group or groups of educators in your PSU familiar with English Language Arts. This survey is estimated to take about 30-45 minutes to complete, depending on how you choose to deploy within your PSU. Please use the Survey Companion Document to assist you when providing feedback on Draft 1.
The State Board of Education's (SBE) expectation is 75% of North Carolina's districts submit the PSU survey. View the PSU surveys tally, which shows PSUs in green that have submitted, along with the number of surveys from each district.

ELA Leaders | Point of Contact List [Clarification]
Purpose of the List: The ELA Leaders List is used to ensure that ELA Leaders stay informed about the latest ELA standards revision updates. This list is also used to send First Friday messages, invite leaders to quarterly ELA Leaders Meetings, and/or seek feedback from specific subgroups of ELA Leaders.
Based on our first 24-25 SY meeting, moving forward this list should include those attending as part of your literacy team, as applicable.
Responsibility of Sharing Updates: Individuals on this list are expected to share information from the quarterly meetings and First Friday ListServ messages with the necessary stakeholders within their district/PSU. These communications contain important updates on standards, upcoming professional development opportunities, and other key information.
When to Update: Updates to the ELA Leaders list are facilitated via the completion of the ELA Point of Contact Form. This form only needs to be completed when:
- Someone has retired.
- A new person has been hired.
- An update is necessary to keep the list accurate (e.g., title changes, name changes, etc.).
If You're Unsure: If you are unsure who is currently on the list for your PSU, please email Mary Phillips at mary.phillips@dpi.nc.gov for clarification.
Thank you for your attention to helping us keep this list up-to-date!
