SHAC Learning Collaborative
Monday, December 9th at 3:30 pm
We will be wrapping up the calendar year with an overview of Beyond Sports.
You do not want to miss this opportunity to learn from Mike Kennedy and his team and how they support Title 1 students in grades 3-8 in sports and academics. Part of their mission is to connect young people into sports at a younger age to engage in social and physical activity that provides valuable skills over the lifespan.
Through collaborative approaches and listening to the community, they have grown from 3 schools in year 1 to 36 in year 4. It's not about developing athletes (though there will be some). It's about providing equitable access to physical activity and social experiences.

An RFA for School Health Centers was posted on Friday November 22nd. You can find more information at the following link.
The North Carolina School Health Centers Program (SHC) is administered through the School, Adolescent and Child Health Unit, Whole Child Health Section of the NC Division of Child and Family Well-Being. The purpose of this RFA is to provide funding support for School Health Centers (SHC’s) that focus on primary and preventive medical care of older children and adolescents, ages 10 to 19. The School Health Centers (SHCs) provide access to comprehensive, coordinated and preventive health care either through direct services and programs and/or through referrals to other primary care providers including medical homes, medical specialists, mental and behavioral health agencies, nutritionists and other community services and programs.
SHCs are located in or near high schools and middle schools to increase access to physical and mental health services for youth in local communities. There is a strong emphasis on preventive health services with the goal of improving children’s health and readiness to learn. Services are provided in collaboration with individual schools, school districts, health care providers, medical homes, local health departments, and other community-based agencies. Services include acute medical care; management of chronic illness; mental health counseling; and preventive services, such as health education, physical and dental exams and nutrition services.
Submit complete Application, including signature of authorized representative to Michael Taylor via email Michael.Taylor@dhhs.nc.gov no later than 5:00 p.m. on December 20, 2024.

Teacher Talk
If you, or someone you know, is an adult who works or volunteers with kids and teens ages 10-18, you now have the opportunity to take this groundbreaking training.
You can take the course at your own pace, at a time that works for you and your lifestyle. Watch a short video explaining the course here! It’s about 3 hours long and is now available for you, team members, and any volunteers or staff who work with young people. Learn how to respond in healthy ways to sensitive moments and prevent continued and elevated harm. You'll be able to download an editable PDF workbook that you can print or save, along with a certificate of completion.
We have a limited number of spaces that we would like to make available for you and your team. This opportunity is part of our voluntary program evaluation or “pilot” that is exploring the usefulness and effectiveness of the Teacher Talk program. Pilot participants are eligible to win one of five $100 Amazon gift cards. If you, or anyone you know, is interested in participating just needs to complete this quick 4-question eligibility form to get started! Participants will have free course access for 6 weeks from when they first create a Teacher Talk username and password to complete the evaluation activities.
Please feel free to contact Dr. Chimi Boyd-Keyes (cbkenterprises@gmail.com) or the evaluation lead Dr. Laurie Graham (laurie.graham@ssw.umaryland.edu) with any questions you might have.
