International Education Week
The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) and the Area Studies Centers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Duke University are thrilled to offer an incredible professional development opportunity as part of International Education Week (IEW) that is designed to enhance your global understanding and perspective. The focus of this year's event is "Engage, Educate, Empower: Elevating K-12 Learning through Global Perspectives." Expert speakers from UNC-Chapel Hill, Duke University, and beyond have been lined up to unpack a variety of captivating topics and case studies from Latin America, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia.
The aim of this professional development is to equip K-12 educators with innovative global education-related teaching materials and strategies that can be adapted to different K-12 subjects while aligning with North Carolina standards. This workshop is for ALL educators, regardless of your content area or grade level. Educators who attend the in-person workshop in Chapel Hill on Saturday, November 9 can earn 0.5 CEUs. Collaborating to Integrate ELD Standards Webinar Archive Available
Learn to seamlessly incorporate English Language Development (ELD) standards into instruction. This archive shows participants how to collaborate to share strategies, resources, and best practices for supporting MLs to enhance instructional effectiveness and help students achieve language proficiency and academic success.
Both the recording and the slides are available for use with educators on the ELD Standards Hub.
Classroom Microgrants Program for Language Educators
Applications due for the first cycle on Tuesday, November 12
The Language Connects Foundation (LCF)/Vista Microgrants Program for Language Educators is an initiative aimed at supporting and empowering those who are passionate about teaching languages and incorporating cultural elements into their lessons.
This program is open to all K-12 language educators regardless of setting. Eligible individuals may apply for grants of $300 to fund a variety of projects, such as:
- Organizing cultural events or activities for their learners, including those in collaboration with relevant community organizations; and
- Creating projects that support diverse perspectives and provide opportunities to develop cultural competence.
There will be 100 microgrants of $300 each awarded between September 2024 and May 2025 across three funding cycles, which have the following application periods and deadlines:
- September 2 to November 12, with awards announced on Monday, November 18;
- November 13 to February 5, with awards announced on Monday, February 10; and
- February 6 to April 30, with awards announced on Monday, May 5.

A Review of EL Policies Goes to the State Board
The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) Offices of Academic Standards and Accountability and Testing, presented recommendations on EL policy to the NC State Board of Education on Wednesday, November 6th, 2024.
The Offices of Academic Standards and Accountability and Testing presented information on:
- Standardized Home Language Survey
- Entrance/Identification Criteria
- Multiple Measure Exit Pathway
- Exit Criteria
