September 2024 Charter School Applicants:
Ms. Melanie Rackley, OCS Consultant, reviewed the charter school application process, relevant legislation and policies, and the CSRB responsibilities. The following charter school applications were presented to CSRB for a vote to approve, not approve, or schedule a second interview:
Accelerated Applicants:
2-Hour Learning Online Academy - Application not approved. Vote was unanimous.
Trinitas Classical Academy - Application not approved. Vote was unanimous.
Standard Applicants with an EMO:
Somerset Preparatory Academy; EMO: Somerset Academy, Inc - Application not approved. Vote was unanimous.
Centerpoint Classical Academy; EMO: American Traditional Academies - Application approved. Vote was 4:2 in favor.
Introduction of Teacher and Principal of the Year
- Dr. Natasha Norins, OCS Consultant, introduced the NC charter school teacher and principal of the year. Congratulations to the following recipients:
Principal of the Year: Sarena Fuller - Art Space Charter
Teacher of the Year: Lee Haywood - Uwharrie Charter
Other Business:
- CSRB members voted unanimously for Mr. Bruce Friend as Board Chair and Dr. John Eldridge as Vice-Chair.
- Ms. Ashley Baquero, OCS Director, presented updates related to the Office of Charter Schools. She also introduced our new Assistant Director, Ms. Nicky Niewinski.
- Mr. Steven Walker, CSRB Attorney, submitted updates to the Board's Bylaws. The revisions were approved in a unanimous vote.
- Ms. Jenna Cook, OCS Consultant, provided a preview of the 2025 Renewal Cohort and an update on stipulation schools who are up for renewal in 2026.
