Sylvia Mendez Newcomers School
With North Carolina's influx of newcomer students many educators are asking what they can do to support these students. One answer is to create a class or school specifically to meet their needs. One such school, Sylvia Mendez Newcomers School, in High Point, North Carolina, is the first public school in our state that was named after an Hispanic leader.
The school has a dual focus to integrate on grade level instruction with English language development for newly arrived students to the US. Check out their school video profile to learn more about this unique newcomer program. The school's Principal, Christian Walter walterc2@gcsnc.com , is excited to answer your questions about working with newcomers and starting a newcomer program of your own!
