Supporting Multilingual Learners in North Carolina: Implications from the ML Success Project

Join the discussion about grant findings involving multilingual learner characteristics and trends and learn about strategies and innovations for working them!

Sponsorship Opportunity

NCDPI requests PSUs to financially support individuals attending the WIDA Professional Learning opportunities. We recognize some PSUs may have limited funding to send participants. In support of the ongoing efforts to have statewide ML/Title III education, the training opportunities in K-12 public education, the ML/Title III team has allocated limited sponsorship funds for individuals from areas of high need, with limited teacher-training options. Make sure participation is approved by your supervisor.

This sponsorship reimburses educators for transportation, lodging, and meals.

Sponsored educators will be responsible for

Up-front payment of all fees related to this professional learning event
Submission of reimbursement paperwork
Presentation or portfolio on the impact of learning for their classroom, school, or PSU
- Design a PD or instructional activity to share with NCDPI and use within your PSU
- Upload the task within 30 business days after the event to a folder that will be provided

Applications are due September 15, 2024, and decisions on whether you receive a sponsorship or not will be announced by September 25, 2024.

2024-2025 Teacher-Student Initiative

Economic Sustainability: Empowering the Next Generation of Global Problem-Solvers

For NC High School and Early College Educators

In-Person and Virtual Program | $1000 Stipend

The Teacher-Student Initiative is a program designed for North Carolina high school and early college teachers who are interested in infusing their classrooms with global learning. During the 2024-2025 program, educators from diverse subject areas, from pre-calculus and history to fine arts and foods, will work with UNC-Chapel Hill Professor Arv Malhotra (Kenan-Flagler Business School) to strengthen their understanding of Economic Sustainability: Empowering the Next Generation of Global Problem-Solvers and make connections to educators’ STEAM specialties. This year's theme will provide students with the opportunity to study economic sustainability in Kenya and work together with others to take steps to solve problems.

Educators will connect this research with their STEAM specialties and work alongside the TSI assistant director, faculty, and peers to design a lesson plan that puts that learning into action in their classrooms. UNC World View Students Day will allow students to engage directly with Prof. Arv Malhotra virtually.

Educators will also receive one-on-one coaching with the Assistant Director for the Teacher-Student Initiative, professional development and UNC resources, a stipend of $1000, and up to 3.0 CEUS or 30 PDCH.

UNC World View K-12 Global Education Symposium

Opening Classrooms to the World

For K-12 and Early College Educators

October 10 | 8:30 AM-4:30 PM ET | Friday Conference Center, Chapel Hill, NC

The 2024 K-12 Global Education Symposium, Opening Classrooms to the World, will set a foundation for interdisciplinary global learning in schools and districts across North Carolina and beyond. To prepare students to thrive in our interconnected world, plenary talks and smaller sessions will spark innovation, examine global issues, and build global competencies in educators.

The program will support classroom teachers, support personnel, and school and district administrators as they develop or advance global education in their schools and districts. Participants will gain new knowledge, strategies, and resources that support curricula and global programs that open classrooms to the world. All educators are encouraged to come with a team and enjoy a great day of learning and networking!

Thriving Globally: What’s Next for Community College Students

Community college students are transitioning into a global workforce where they will need to adapt to evolving local and global challenges and opportunities.

The 2024 UNC World View Community College Symposium will bring early college and community college educators together to explore global themes that are relevant to various disciplines, including business, health, and education. Speakers will address topics like

The NCDPI DL/I Team is pleased to open applications for the DL/I in NC Committee for the next two-year cycle, 2024 - 2026. Becoming a member of this committee provides you with the opportunity to share your expertise and collaborate with the NCDPI DL/I Team and other North Carolina educators from across the state.

Please read the DL/I in NC Committee Scope of Work for complete details about expectations and goals. For questions, contact the NCDPI DL/I Team co-leads at NCDLI@dpi.nc.gov.
