A little about Jennifer
Jennifer has 21 years of education experience in the state of North Carolina. She served as a classroom teacher, math coach/interventionists, and district office facilitator for K-5 Mathematics and most recently Pre K-12 Mathematics. For the last 18 years, she has supported students, teachers, and school leaders in Orange County Schools. Previously, she was a classroom teacher in the Alamance-Burlington school system to begin her career. Jennifer is looking forward to collaborating with math leaders across the state of North Carolina to support the mathematical development of our elementary students.

The NCDPI K-12 Math Content & Pedagogy Series resumes in the 2024 Fall season!
Teachers, teacher leaders, instructional coaches, district staff, and administrators are offered professional learning opportunities to engage in mathematics content and effective teaching practices. Sessions are focused on elementary, middle, and high school mathematics content and pedagogy aligned to the NC mathematics standard course of study while highlighting practitioners in the field. These sessions are designed to be interactive and engaging.
Participants can earn 2 contact hours per session. Each session meets virtually for 90 minutes with a 30-minute asynchronous reflection time to provide feedback. Sessions will be recorded; however, participants will only receive contact hours when participating in real-time sessions.
The information and resources shared are both beneficial and useful. Don't miss this opportunity and please share with teachers and leaders in your area!

NCDPI HONORS LEVEL COURSEWORK
REGIONAL PROFESSIONAL LEARNING
Fall 2024
In this session, participants will delve into the components of the new honors policy and learn how to evaluate current honors-level courses to ensure they meet the required depth and complexity. They will explore the Honors Level Course Development and Evaluation Tool and other resources while receiving guidance on policy implementation. Additionally, participants will deepen their knowledge of advanced learning indicators and engage with best-practice instructional strategies that support honors-level coursework.
Bring a team of 4-5 people who are involved with overseeing honors implementation in the district. Consider the roles of CAOs, Instructional coaches, high school principals and APs, lead teachers, etc. This PD is a “train-the-trainer” model.

Actuarial Science Day and Career Fair
UNC Charlotte
Friday, September 27, 2024
The Actuarial Science Program and the Actuarial Science Club at UNC Charlotte are holding their annual Actuarial Science Day and Career Fair on Friday, September 27, 2024 in the Lucas Room of the Cone building. University students, high school students, parents, and teachers are invited to learn about the actuarial field, which is consistently ranked among the top STEM professions.
Event begins at 10 am with guest speakers and presentations followed by lunch at 1 pm, provided to all registered participants.
The Career Fair will take place from 2 pm - 4 pm, where employers meet and connect with interested actuarial students and STEM majors from high schools and universities across the Carolinas.

2024-2025 Teacher-Student Initiative
Economic Sustainability: Empowering the Next Generation of Global Problem-Solvers
For NC High School and Early College Educators
In-Person and Virtual Program | $1000 Stipend
The Teacher-Student Initiative is a program designed for North Carolina high school and early college teachers who are interested in infusing their classrooms with global learning. During the 2024-2025 program, educators from diverse subject areas, from pre-calculus and history to fine arts and foods, will work with UNC-Chapel Hill Professor Arv Malhotra (Kenan-Flagler Business School) to strengthen their understanding of Economic Sustainability: Empowering the Next Generation of Global Problem-Solvers and make connections to educators’ STEAM specialties. This year's theme will provide students with the opportunity to study economic sustainability in Kenya and work together with others to take steps to solve problems.
Educators will connect this research with their STEAM specialties and work alongside the TSI assistant director, faculty, and peers to design a lesson plan that puts that learning into action in their classrooms. UNC World View Students Day will allow students to engage directly with Prof. Arv Malhotra virtually.
Educators will also receive one-on-one coaching with the Assistant Director for the Teacher-Student Initiative, professional development and UNC resources, a stipend of $1000, and up to 3.0 CEUS or 30 PDCH.

UNC World View K-12 Global Education Symposium
Opening Classrooms to the World
For K-12 and Early College Educators
October 10 | 8:30 AM-4:30 PM ET | Friday Conference Center, Chapel Hill, NC
The 2024 K-12 Global Education Symposium, Opening Classrooms to the World, will set a foundation for interdisciplinary global learning in schools and districts across North Carolina and beyond. To prepare students to thrive in our interconnected world, plenary talks and smaller sessions will spark innovation, examine global issues, and build global competencies in educators.
The program will support classroom teachers, support personnel, and school and district administrators as they develop or advance global education in their schools and districts. Participants will gain new knowledge, strategies, and resources that support curricula and global programs that open classrooms to the world. All educators are encouraged to come with a team and enjoy a great day of learning and networking!

WIDA Sponsorship Opportunity
NCDPI requests PSUs to financially support individuals attending the WIDA Professional Learning opportunities. We recognize some PSUs may have limited funding to send participants. In support of the ongoing efforts to have statewide ML/Title III education, the training opportunities in K-12 public education, the ML/Title III team has allocated limited sponsorship funds for individuals from areas of high need, with limited teacher-training options. Make sure participation is approved by your supervisor.
This sponsorship reimburses educators for transportation, lodging, and meals.
Sponsored educators will be responsible for
- Up-front payment of all fees related to this professional learning event
- Submission of reimbursement paperwork
- Presentation or portfolio on the impact of learning for their classroom, school, or PSU
- Design a PD or instructional activity to share with NCDPI and use within your PSU
- Upload the task within 30 business days after the event to a folder that will be provided
Applications are due September 15, 2024, and decisions on whether you receive a sponsorship or not will be announced by September 25, 2024.

NC K-12 Math Standards Resource Hub
The NCDPI K-12 Mathematics team has created a repository to provide a variety of resources for supporting school leaders, administrators, educators, and parents/caregivers. The NC K-12 Math Standards Resource Hub houses the standards, communications, and recommended resources related to the implementation of the North Carolina K-12 Math Standard Course of Study (NCSCOS).
The hub includes:
- K-12 standards and unpacking documents
- Previous PD presentations, recordings, and resources
- At Home Resource Guides for parent/guardians
- Math Options Chart aligned to post graduation plans
- STEM Content Integration
Math educators are encouraged to browse, reference, download, share, discuss, and adapt resources.

External Implementation Guide
A Place for All Standards Resources
The External Implementation Guide is a repository for all North Carolina Standard Course of Study (NCSOS) stakeholders. This repository provides a variety of resources for supporting administrators, educators, and parents during the implementation of the Standard Course of Study for each content area. The range of resources offers users an opportunity to determine their own specific needs and find materials that suit them.
This Canvas repository can be accessed with or without a Canvas account. Browse through resources to help you learn, plan, instruct, review, and inform yourself or others.

K-12 Mathematics Standards Review Overview
The NCDPI Math team has launched the K-12 Mathematics Standards Review process.
Key things to know:
- All K-12 Math standards will be reviewed at one time, unlike the previous review/revision process.
- The currently planned timeline:
- 2024-2025 school year for Review (focus groups, surveys, interviews, research etc.).
- 2025-2026 school year for Revisions (If approved for revisions by the SBE)
- 2026-2027 school year for Installation
- 2027-2028 school year for Implementation
Details were shared in the Math Office Hour on May 21, 2024.
4th Grade Math Professional Development Grant
Recruiting Schools and Districts Now!
NCDPI received a 5-year grant for nearly $8 million to implement a virtual learning professional development platform known as “Patterns” with 4th grade math. The study focuses on building knowledge and confidence in math with a focus on NC 4th grade standards and content related to fractions. Teachers will explore ways to implement an inquiry-based approach to math instruction and work with coaches and colleagues from across the state.
DPI is now recruiting schools and districts who may be interested in participating or learning more about various opportunities and ways to be involved. Opportunities include a short-term study in the Fall of 2024 as well as more in-depth participation starting in the Fall of 2025.
CEU’s, college credit, and stipends are all available!
