The NCDPI K-12 Math Content & Pedagogy Series will begin again in the 2024 Fall Season. Teachers, teacher leaders, coaches, district staff, and administrators have responded with overwhelmingly positive feedback. Sessions are focused on elementary, middle, and high school mathematics content and pedagogy while highlighting practitioners in the field. Participants earn 2 contact hours per session. Each session meets virtually for 90 minutes with a 30-minute asynchronous reflection time. The information and resources shared are both beneficial and useful. Don't miss this opportunity and please share with teachers and leaders in your area!
High School session information and registration will be coming soon!
We look forward to seeing you there!

New Resource: LIS in the Content Areas
This document provides a snapshot of what the LIS may look like in the content area classroom. Please note that the LIS Components for reading foundational skills, small group instruction, and observation and assessment are not included below as these standards and practices are consistent across all classrooms. The LIS Components included in this resource illustrate how the LIS may be tailored for disciplinary purposes. The following content areas are included in this resource:
- Science
- Math
- Social Studies
- Arts Education
- Physical & Health Education
- Career & Technical Education
- Language Acquisition
The examples included in this document are not intended to be the curriculum, nor do they indicate the whole of a curriculum to be written by a Public School Unit (PSU). The instructional examples do not include all of the LIS practices listed for each LIS and do not serve as the only method for addressing the LIS. The items listed in this document are intended to assist in the planning of local curriculum and classroom instruction. Educators should use their professional judgment when developing curriculum and instruction that utilize the LIS and their accompanying practices and when adapting and aligning the instruction for their content area’s Standard Course of Study (NCSCOS).

4th Grade Math Professional Development Grant
Recruiting Schools and Districts Now!
NCDPI received a 5-year grant for nearly $8 million to implement a virtual learning professional development platform known as “Patterns” with 4th grade math. The study focuses on building knowledge and confidence in math with a focus on NC 4th grade standards and content related to fractions. Teachers will explore ways to implement an inquiry-based approach to math instruction and work with coaches and colleagues from across the state.
DPI is now recruiting schools and districts who may be interested in participating or learning more about various opportunities and ways to be involved. Opportunities include a short-term study in the Fall of 2024 as well as more in-depth participation starting in the Fall of 2025.
CEU’s, college credit, and stipends are all available!
