Monthly Standards Update

In May 2024, the NCDPI ELA Team began revision of the current 2017 ELA Standard Course of Study (SCOS). In an effort to keep stakeholders informed during the Revision Phase, the NCDPI ELA Team will provide monthly standards updates that contain the latest announcements and current news regarding the ELA SCOS.

These updates will be sent every first Friday of the month.

*Please note: Because the Literacy Instruction Standards (LIS) have moved into the implementation phase (view the 2024-2025 timeline), information regarding the LIS will migrate to the general ELA listserv. Subscribe to our listserv to continue receiving LIS updates.

ELA Standard Course of Study (SCOS) Update

Standards Writing Team (SWT) Selected and Notified!

The English Language Arts Standards Writing Team (SWT) application closed on May 31, 2024. Over 100 applications were submitted and reviewed by a cross-agency team, and of those, 15 were selected to serve as the K-12 ELA Standards Writing Team.

As of now, selection notifications have been sent to all members!

Applicants selected for the English Language Arts SWT represent a range of external stakeholders from the eight State Board of Education regions who will provide varying perspectives and experiences regarding the current ELA Standard Course of Study.

First Meeting of SWT Upcoming!

Planning is underway for the initial meeting of the SWT. In the revision phase, the SWT will create drafts of new K-12 standards for English Language Arts based on the recommendations of the ELA Data Review Committee (DRC). They will also draw on extensive data collected during the review phase from surveys, focus groups, interviews, and research.

Please read the English Language Arts SWT Scope of Work for additional details, which includes a tentative timeline for the 2024-2025 school year and a forecast of when Draft 1 might be shared for public feedback.

PSU Form Updates Requested

The ELA Team is in the process of planning and facilitating ELA Standards Revision for the 24-25 school year.

To ensure our stakeholders receive the most up-to-date information on this process, please consider submitting the contact information for your ELA/Literacy leaders. We recognize PSUs experience turnover during the summer months and adding your PSU's contact information assists us in ensuring we connect with the correct individuals. Names submitted to this form will be added to our ELA Leaders listserv and receive information on draft standards, PSU surveys, PD opportunities, etc.

Upcoming 2024-2025 Writing PD Series

To support integration of writing across disciplines, the ELA Team will offer four webinars in the 2024-2025 school year, covering the following topics:

Teaching Grammar in Context (September 12);
Teaching Vocabulary in the Context of Writing (November 7);
Writing in Response to Reading (March 20); and
Time-Constrained Writing (April 10).

Registration is now open for this series. To register, view the flyer! Participants who attend at least three out of the four sessions within this series will earn a 24-25 Writing Series badge.

2024 OAS Standards Academy

The Office of Academic Standards receives many requests
from the field for standards-based professional
development. We heard you and responded by providing
PSUs with this Standards Academy. During the NCSCOS
content area sessions, participants will be guided through
all content area standards, from unpacking to instructional
practices. These sessions aim to provide new and veteran
teachers, coaches, and leaders a comprehensive
understanding of the NCSCOS.

When: August 1-2, 2024

Where: Durham School of the Arts
