ACADEMIC STANDARDS

 


Are you interested in becoming a member of the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) English Language Development Support Team (ELDST)?

The team is a cadre of North Carolina Public School employees with a strong understanding of effective theory-based concepts for best practices in multilingual learner (ML) education. Team members become part-time NCDPI employees that develop resources and provide professional development across the state. 

 

Applications demonstrating a strong understanding of language acquisition, more specifically:

ELDST
  • NC ELD Standard Course of Study
  • Literacy Instruction Standards
  • Academic language and vocabulary instruction
  • Co-teaching
  • Content area expertise and/or integration
  • Small group instruction
  • Newcomers
  • Frameworks like: Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP), Expediting Comprehension for English Language Learners (ExC-ELL), Guided Language Acquisition Design (GLAD)
  • Dual Language/Immersion (DL/I)

Outstanding presentation and organizational skills are a must. Experience in K-12 NC public schools preferred.  See the ELDST Scope of Work for more information.

OELA Benefits of Multilingualism Infographics: New Languages Released

There are multiple benefits to being multilingual, multiliterate, and multicultural in today’s global society. Knowing more than one language from birth, acquiring a new language through school, or learning languages later in life, can provide tangible advantages in many areas. From delaying cognitive signs of aging, to earning college credits, and getting a better job offer, multilingualism is an asset that can benefit English learners as well as native English speakers in a variety of ways. 

 

Haitian Creole, Hmong, Russian, Somali, and Tagalog have been added to the existing documents in Arabic, Chinese, English, Portuguese, Spanish, and Vietnamese. (Hmong pictured)

New Dual Language Book Available

In collaboration with several multilingual learner (ML) teachers across the state, the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources (DNCR) has created a new free supplemental resource for grade school teachers working with students learning English and Spanish. “Plott’s Tales and Trails: Aventuras with Carolina” is the fictional story of two friends exploring North Carolina and helping each other learn. The characters visit four public DNCR locations and explore the diverse peoples, histories, animals, and plants at each. The book emphasizes the importance and benefits of being a multilingual learner and includes activities to reinforce what students are learning in the classroom.

The SPML is a team of experts from across the state who work with the NCDPI's ML/Title III team to develop projects, comprehensive guidance, and other critical tasks to promote equitable access for Multilingual Learners (MLs) in North Carolina. ELD Mapping Document Updated with the 2023 Science SCOS!

The ML/Title III Team and the Science Team at NCDPI have combined forces to bring you the updated Mapping Document. This document is designed to support educators in weaving the ELD standards into the 2023 version of the NC Science Standard Course of Study to effectively support MLs.

AIM Conference

The 2024 AIM Conference will be held on Oct. 7-9, 2024 at the Raleigh Convention Center.  This agency-wide event is an excellent opportunity to share your expertise with the field. This year’s conference supports public school units as they plan for and implement the Portrait of a Graduate. All sessions will be 1 hour & 15 minutes.  See the 2024 AIM DRAFT Agenda.
