2024 National School of Character

Haynes-Inman Education Center

Haynes Inman

Dr. Arthur Schwartz, President of Character.org & Kevin Carr, Principal of Haynes-Inman

On May 30, 2024 Haynes-Inman Education Center in Jamestown was notified by Character.org that it had been named a 2024 National School of Character.  Seventy three schools received recognition nationwide and Haynes-Inman was the only school in North Carolina. It is the second time the school has been named a State School of Character having received that distinction in 2017.  Click here to watch a video about Haynes-Inman Education Center.

Since its inception, the National Schools of Character program has impacted over three million

students, staff, parents, and community members. The schools and districts that apply must

meet the rigorous standards articulated in Character.org’s 11 Principles Framework for Schools:

A Guide to Cultivating a Culture of Character. Each school is assessed by a team of trained

evaluators. “Any school may apply and you can reapply after five years,” said Kevin Carr, principal at Haynes-Inman. “Our school has always focused on treating one another with dignity and respect. It is nice to be recognized; we put such emphasis on our climate and culture.”

Supporting Positive School Climate with SEL

Wednesday, June 26, 2024 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm EDT

REGISTER

This webinar will explore actionable ways to support the development of a positive, inclusive school climate by leveraging social-emotional learning (SEL). SEL has long been considered a tool for creating positive school and classroom climates, but what does that look like in high school? Learn how to take SEL out of self-contained lessons and infuse it into your school environment by engaging educators and students in co-creating an SEL-supportive school climate.

Discover leader-led, schoolwide SEL strategies that support the development of key aspects of school climate while simultaneously creating the type of environment students need to build lifelong social-emotional competencies. In this session, attendees will investigate the importance of school climate for students and educators, explore the connection between schoolwide SEL and positive school climate, and learn to apply SEL strategies to bolster school climate.

New Materials for Global Education Recognitions

In addition, new materials and information for the GEDB and the Global Ready designations for schools and districts have been released.

Crosswalk of Instructional Practices

The Literacy Instruction Standards and Content Area Practices Resource (LIS) aims to provide teachers of all content areas and character education with an understanding of how current domains of instructional practice found within the content areas align with the LIS. Since the alignment between the LIS and instructional practices in various content areas exists, all educators, regardless of their discipline, participate in literacy instruction.

Teachers should reference this document when planning content area and literacy instruction to ensure students are fully meeting the demands of the NCSCOS.

11 Principles Guidebook

Character.org has released the newly revised version of the 11 Principles Framework for Schools: A Guide to Cultivating a Culture of Character. The Guidebook explains each principle and key indicators, along with recent school-based examples.

Professional Learning Opportunity: How to Integrate Character Education in English Language Arts & Social Studies through Holocaust Education

Are you looking for ways to implement both Character Education and the Gizella Abramson Holocaust Education Act in ELA and Social Studies classrooms?

Learning about Character Education through the lens of the Holocaust allows students to build their character and develop skills like empathy and social awareness. In an effort to foster these skills, NCDPI partnered with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum to create standards-based resources for implementation in secondary grades. These resources are based on using the texts Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank and Night by Elie Wiesel. The goal of the resources is for teachers to be able to embed both character education and Holocaust education seamlessly into the core curriculum.

Contact Thomas.Daugherty@dpi.nc.gov and Kelly.Schultz@dpi.nc.gov to set up a professional learning experience or to learn more about these resources and how they can be used in your classrooms.
