ELA Standard Course of Study (SCOS) Update
Standards Writing Team (SWT) Application Window Closed
The English Language Arts Standards Writing Team (SWT) application closed on May 31, 2024. Over 100 applications were submitted, and at this time, a cross-agency team is reviewing applications.
Notifications of selection will be communicated in the coming weeks!
Applicants selected for the English Language Arts SWT will represent a range of external stakeholders from the eight State Board of Education regions who will be able to provide varying perspectives and experiences regarding the current ELA Standard Course of Study.
Planning is underway for the initial meeting of the SWT. In the revision phase, the SWT will create drafts of new K-12 standards for English Language Arts based on the recommendations of the ELA Data Review Committee (DRC). They will also draw on extensive data collected during the review phase from surveys, focus groups, interviews, and research.
Please read the English Language Arts SWT Scope of Work for additional details, which includes a tentative timeline for the 2024-2025 school year and a forecast of when Draft 1 might be shared for public feedback.

Literacy Instruction Standards (LIS) Update
Coach's Corner
In lieu of the quarterly SCOOP for the 2023-2024 school year, the NCDPI ELA Team is excited to announce the Coach's Corner. The ELA Team partners with the ELA Consultative Committee (ELACC) to provide instructional leadership with this monthly newsletter to support implementation of the Literacy Instruction Standards (LIS). Each Coach's Corner will feature and highlight a component of the LIS. Issues could include applicable PLC activities to guide discussion and planning of the LIS, coaching frames to inspire teacher autonomy and ownership, and voices from the field that speak to the efficacy of the LIS in practice. View past issues of the Coach's Corner.
Issue 12: Engagement
Providing intentional opportunities for students to foster literacy engagement is paramount to enabling them to access the full depth and breadth of the NCSCOS standards that they are learning. Teachers can support student learning by creating and maintaining a positive literacy environment when using reading, writing, and oral language in both ELA and content-area instruction. Providing authentic and relevant literacy experiences can further engage students by connecting them to content that is deliberately practical and useful in the real-world.
Check out June's issue to learn how to support engagement as an instructional leader in your school!
