Moving from the Revision to the Installation Phase
SBE Presentation on June 5 - 6
The World Languages Standards Writing Team (SWT) has finalized Draft 3 of the proposed K-12 Standard Course of Study for World Languages, and it will be presented to the State Board of Education (SBE) for discussion at the meeting on June 5 - 6, 2024.
The SBE meeting is livestreamed, and the World Languages presentation is tentatively scheduled for the morning of Wednesday, June 5. All are welcome at the SBE meeting, either on-site at the Friday Institute for Educational Innovation on NC State's campus in Raleigh or online on the NCDPI Public Meetings YouTube Channel via a web browser.
Next Steps for World Languages
NCDPI staff will be presenting Draft 3 for action or approval at the July 11, 2024 SBE meeting, which is virtual. If the new state standards are approved, the Installation Phase will launch with the dissemination of the new standards in late July, along with the initial support documents like the Crosswalk that shows how the old and new standards compare.
In early-mid August, an initial round of statewide professional development is tentatively being planned to introduce the new K-12 Standard Course of Study (SCoS) for World Languages, and it may encompass an updated version of Literacy in World Languages from the Literacy Instruction Standards (LIS) Series - Part 2 in the 23-24 SY. These 3-hour sessions will likely be offered in-person and virtually in various regions and dates around the state. Stay tuned for more details as they become available.
Throughout the 2024 - 2025 school year, the Installation Phase will be taking place, which you can see outlined below. Then the Initial Implementation Phase will begin in Fall 2025, when the new standards will be used for the first time in all K-12 classrooms. Please see additional details on pages 23 - 26 in the North Carolina SCOS Internal Procedures Manual.
Installation Phase in 2024 - 2025
- NCDPI makes new standards available with statewide professional development, along with updated support materials, such as a glossary of terms, unpacking documents, the Administrator Guides for World Languages, the Clarifying Objectives by Course Outcomes (COCOs) documents for curriculum writing, etc.
- Public School Units (PSUs), or districts and charter schools, develop plans for use of new standards in local curriculum for their K-12 World Language programs.
Initial Implementation Phase in 2025 - 2026
- New standards used for the first time in all K-12 classrooms.
- PSUs rollout local training and curriculum writing, and NCDPI continues to facilitate statewide training and the development of support documents, as needed.

Standards Resources
CAST for World Languages Canvas Course
Closing out at the end of July
The Counselor Advising and Scheduling Tips (CAST) for World Languages mini-course is designed to guide educators in understanding the current North Carolina World Language Standards, along with its programs, course codes, and paths that students can take towards earning the Global Languages Endorsement (GLE), North Carolina's Seal of Biliteracy.
Since we will soon have new standards, the CAST for World Languages course will be closed out at the end of July. After that, it will be revised and updated, then released as part of the professional development towards the end of the Installation Phase or at the beginning of the Initial Implementation Phase.
There's still time to enroll in or finish up the CAST for World Languages course. Please use the links in the Canvas Courses area of the World Languages Resources Hub at https://go.ncdpi.gov/WLresources to access any of the three self-paced Canvas courses for language educators.

Standards Writing Team (SWT) Applications
Due by Friday, May 31
On May 2, 2024, the State Board of Education (SBE) accepted the English Language Arts (ELA) Data Review Committee (DRC) recommendation to revise the current ELA Standard Course of Study, moving our ELA colleagues into the Revision Phase that World Languages is wrapping up.
|
The NCDPI ELA Team is now in the process of establishing and convening an ELA Standards Writing Team (SWT) to review feedback compiled by the DRC and create the drafts of the new standards during the 2024 - 2025 academic year. SWT members review the findings of the DRC and utilize those findings to revise the Standard Course of Study.
*Note: The SWT's revisions are guided by the continued work of the DRC; therefore, members of the current ELA DRC cannot serve on the ELA SWT.
ELA SWT Applications can be submitted through next Friday, May 31, 2024. The ELA SWT will consist of a range of external stakeholders, including: K-12 educators, educational leaders, university professors, content professionals, experts from partner organizations, and community members. The SWT members will be chosen from across the state’s eight regions and represent varying perspectives and experiences regarding the current ELA Standard Course of Study.
Please feel free to share this information with anyone who may be interested in applying for ELA's SWT.
