Registration Open for 2024 CTE Summer Conference 

NCDPI in partnership with the NC Association for Career and Technical Education are excited to bring you this year's 2024 Summer Conference July 15-19 in Winston-Salem! Attendees can expect: collective sessions for collaboration across curricula, a keynote speaker, hands-on experiences, three full days of content for all program areas, additional options for walking tours and networking events in the city and a CTE Curriculum Resource showcase.

PD Opportunity: Recipe for Problem Solving K-5

This training, led by research scholars from the William and Ida Friday Institute for Education Innovation, will provide K-5 teachers with a comprehensive introduction to computational thinking and practical teaching strategies. Participants will explore the fundamentals of computational thinking, coding and age-appropriate programming tools to integrate into their classrooms. By the end of the training, teachers will feel confident in writing lesson plans integrating computational thinking to teach creative and engaging lessons integrating NC content standards, NC K-5 computer science standards and NC Digital Learning Standards for Students.

Burroughs Wellcome Fund Accepting Applications for Student STEM Enrichment Program

The Student STEM Enrichment Program (SSEP) supports diverse programs with a common goal: to enable primary and secondary students to participate in creative, hands-on STEM activities for K-12 students and pursue inquiry-based exploration in North Carolina. These awards provide up to $60,000 per year for three years.

Edvantage Tutoring with NC Virtual Public School

Edvantage Tutoring, as part of North Carolina Virtual Public School (NCVPS), is in the midst of another great semester, continuing to tutor students across NC. The semester is moving right along and exam time will be here soon! Consider allowing your students to participate in Edvantage for tutoring as they prepare for exams!

NCVPS Edvantage Tutoring is offered in the following curriculum areas:

• 7th & 8th Grade ELA
• 7th & 8th Grade Math
• 7th & 8th Grade Science
• 8th Grade Math I
• High School Math I
• High School Math III
• High School Biology
• High School Chemistry
  *An asynchronous Writing Lab is offered

Tutoring for the Spring is available Monday-Thursday from 4-7:30 p.m. nightly through May 23. Daytime tutoring is also available per school/district request and may be utilized for students who are in ISS, suspended, homebound, absent and/or working from home, McKinney-Vento, athletes needing extra support, etc.

There is a flat fee of $35/hour for tutoring. All tutoring slots are available in 30-minute increments.

NC Textbook Commission Seeking Instructional Material Evaluators

The North Carolina Textbook Commission is excited to extend an invitation to expert teachers across the state who are passionate about K-12 Science education. We are currently seeking dedicated individuals to assist in the evaluation of Instructional Materials/Textbooks for K-12 Science.

This opportunity is open to current, certified K-12 Science, Exceptional Children (EC), and English Language Learner (ELL) teachers with a minimum of three years of teaching experience. As a participant, they will be provided with comprehensive orientation and training sessions. These sessions are designed to equip them with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively review and evaluate the latest textbooks and instructional materials in K-12 Science.

The Governor’s School of North Carolina is seeking creative, engaging teachers to serve as instructors for the 2024 summer session. Teachers are needed for both Governor’s School East and West campuses, hosted by Greensboro College and Meredith College.

This School District is Helping High Schoolers Who Aspire to Be Teachers Start Now

"Dozens of Henderson County Public Schools (HCPS) students attended the first Future Educators of Henderson Summit hosted by Blue Ridge Community College. Local education leaders and teachers gathered to hear from the students about their hopes for becoming teachers while students attended sessions to learn more about the field.

Representatives from colleges near and far attended the summit to showcase their education offerings to the prospective students. Blue Ridge Community College, Appalachian State University, Western Carolina University, UNC Asheville, Brevard College, and UNC Wilmington were all present."

Districts Across NC participate in ‘Bring Your Legislator to School Day’

"North Carolina Bring Your Legislator to School Day took place on Monday. Ahead of the day, more than 60 legislators had accepted the invitation.

'Public schools belong to all of us, and legislators from all over the state showed us today how much they believe that’s true,' 2022 Teacher of the Year Leah Carper said. 'We all play a role in ensuring the success of our schools — educators, parents, students, taxpayers, policymakers, and … everyone.”

In Greensboro Visit, First Lady Touts Importance of Career-Related Community College Courses for High School Students

"First Lady Jill Biden visited Guilford Technical Community College’s Greensboro campus on Monday afternoon to hear from and highlight stories of area students exploring careers through community college courses while still enrolled in high school and to bring attention to local, state and federal efforts making that possible.

Biden, who is a community college professor herself, pointed to a new 'Classroom to Career' proposal that President Joe Biden made last month. According to the Education Department, the president’s budget proposal for next the next fiscal year includes $7 billion to reduce student education costs, 'by providing funds to states to expand student access to free, career-connected dual enrollment programs.'

Dual enrollment means students taking college courses while still in high school."
