Luz M. Frye Honored Educator Scholarship Applications

Due April 30

NCCAT's Luz M. Frye Honored Educator Scholarship (HES) was named for Luz Frye who taught Spanish in Wake County for 30 years. Now retired, her professional career included active membership in the Foreign Language Association of North Carolina (FLANC), the Southern Conference on Language Teaching (SCOLT), and the NC Society of Hispanic Professionals. She was named the 2001 FLANC Teacher of the Year, and this HES is available statewide for a World Language teacher.

The 10 statewide and 13 county Honored Educator Scholarships (HES) use the same NCCAT application form for the 2024-2025 period and provide an opportunity for selected teachers to attend an NCCAT seminar of their choice. An HES covers all costs associated with participation in a five-day NCCAT seminar, including program materials, instruction, food, lodging, transportation, and substitute teacher. The honored educator also receives $250 for use in the classroom.

Please submit HES applications by April 30, 2024. For questions on application content, contact Emily Langdon, NCCAT Development Associate, at emily.langdon@nccat.org

NC Virtual logo or NCVPS

The North Carolina Virtual Public School (NCVPS) is the second-largest virtual school in the country. Each year, there are over 55,000 student enrollments across North Carolina that take advantage of NC Virtual to ensure they have access to an unprecedented set of choices. Through online, blended, and mobile courses, students are discovering the “virtual advantage” that will prepare them for college and a career, and the NCVPS World Languages Department is looking for teachers, conversation coaches, and course developers to work part-time.

NCVPS Teachers are required to have a current Professional Educator's NC Teaching License in the subject area in which they are applying to teach, and open positions are currently available in Arabic I - III, German I - II, Mandarin Chinese I - IV, and Spanish I - IV.

NCVPS Conversation Coaches facilitate language practice sessions for small groups of students in NCVPS World Language courses. They must be eligible to work in the USA and provide documentation of a score of at least Advanced Low on the ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) exam (OR professional working proficiency in the World Language). Coach positions are currently available for Arabic I - III and Mandarin Chinese I - IV.

NCVPS is also looking for highly qualified NC certified teachers to serve as subject-matter experts on course development teams in various roles. At this time, course reviewer position(s) are posted in French I - IV, along with content writer positions in Arts Education and Social Studies courses.

ACTFL Connects logo

ACTFL is the national professional organization for K-20 World Language educators, and, much like our regional and state groups, offer leadership opportunities and awards. Please read the information below to learn more about how to submit nominations.

ACTFL Board of Directors Nominations

Due by Friday, June 7

ACTFL is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors made up of leaders in language education from both K-12 and Higher Education. Each year, ACTFL elects at-large members and the President-Elect, to the ACTFL Board. The President-Elect position varies each year, between a K-12 representative and a higher education representative. ACTFL members in good standing for at least three years are encouraged to apply (five years with a proven record of service and leadership within ACTFL for President-Elect). The Nominating Committee reviews all applications and works to ensure that the ACTFL Board is representative of the membership in languages, levels, regions, and other factors, as outlined by ACTFL’s Strategic Plan.

Please see the details and the online nomination form posted on the ACTFL Board Nominations webpage if interested. Questions can be directed to Kristina Jackson at kjackson@actfl.org.

ACTFL & Language Connects Foundation Professional Awards Nominations

Due by Friday, June 14

The ACTFL & Language Connects Foundation Awards Program recognizes outstanding contributions to the field of language education. Awards and nomination procedures are announced and candidates' names are solicited annually. The results of the selections are announced at the ACTFL Annual Meeting, which will be in Philadelphia on November 22 - 24, 2024, and in the Winter issue of The Language Educator.

Please see the 12 awards categories, which include opportunities for individuals and groups across the K-20 spectrum to be recognized. Nomination procedures for each each category are available on the ACTFL & Language Connects Foundation Awards Program webpage, and questions can be addressed by contacting ACTFL at 703-894-2900 or awards@actfl.org.
