Revision Phase Progress
World Languages Draft 2 General Survey
Open until March 4
State Board of Education policy specifies that the NC Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) will formally collect feedback on the draft revised standards from educators, administrators, parents, students, institutions of higher education, business/industry representatives, and other education agencies. The purpose of this survey is to obtain input from educators and stakeholders familiar with the World Languages Standard Course of Study in order to inform revision decisions.
The NCDPI World Languages team requests your thoughtful input and comments on Draft 2 of the revised academic standards for World Languages to inform the revision process.
Please access the general feedback survey at:
The World Languages Draft 2 general survey is estimated to take about 10-20 minutes to complete. We thank you for your time and input. Your feedback is extremely valuable to the World Languages standards revision process.

Overview of Draft 2 Changes
Draft 2 of the proposed World Languages Standard Course of Study from the Standards Writing Team (SWT) reflects changes from the Data Review Committee (DRC)'s Data Report using the Draft 1 Standard-by-Standard survey feedback, including:
- New names for the two strands, Interdisciplinary & Literacy Connections (ILC) and Intercultural & Communities Connections (ICC), that flow through the three standards of the Communication modes, which ensure alignment to the World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages, known as the 5 Cs;
- Additional revisions to the wording of objectives drawing on the NCSSFL-ACTFL Can-Do Statements to show the progression of skills across the nine proficiency levels, Novice Low - Advanced High; and
- Updated proficiency outcomes charts for programs and courses in all three K-12 World Language programs:
- Classical Languages (Latin, Ancient Greek, etc.) with K-8 and Levels I-VI;
- Dual & Heritage Languages with K-12 DL/I and Heritage Levels I-II; and
- Modern Languages with K-8 and Levels I-VIII.
Please review Draft 2 with the standards and 12 - 15 objectives for each proficiency level at the beginning and the proficiency outcomes for courses and programs on the last 11 pages of the document.

Standards Resources
Literacy in World Languages from the LIS Series
The NCDPI English Language Arts (ELA) and World Languages teams joined forces recently for the Literacy in World Languages broadcast, which is part of the Literacy Instruction Standards (LIS) Learning Series: Part 2. Both the slides and the recording are posted in the LIS Toolkit (LIST), along with materials from the other content areas, in the LIS-Based Professional Learning section.

Now Available: LIS and Content Area Crosswalk
The new LIS and Content Area Crosswalk aims to provide teachers of all content areas with an understanding of how current domains of instructional practice found within their content area(s) align with the Literacy Instruction Standards or LIS. Since the alignment between the LIS and instructional practices in various content areas exists, all educators participate in literacy instruction. Teachers should reference this document when planning content area and literacy instruction to ensure students are fully meeting the demands of the NCSCoS.
The World Languages section can be found on pages 9-10 where the LIS components are crosswalked with the domains of the Teacher Effectiveness for Language Learning (TELL) Framework.
