Charter Schools Review Board Highlights

 

February 5 & 6, 2024

CSRB Basics

  • CSRB meetings are streamed live every month on the DPI Youtube page
  • Meeting agendas are posted to Eboard approximately a week prior to each meeting. 
  • The next regularly-scheduled CSRB meeting is March 11 & 12 at the DPI Building in Raleigh. 
  • CSRB member lists, previous minutes, and other information is housed on the OCS web page

February Charter School Renewal Votes

10-Year Renewal

CSRB voted to grant the following charter schools a 10-year renewal beginning July 1, 2024:

  • Neuse Charter School
  • Sugar Creek Charter
  • Community School of Davidson

7-Year Renewal

 

CSRB voted to grant the following charter schools a 7-year renewal beginning July 1, 2024:

  • Marjorie Williams Academy
  • Carolina International School
  • Community Public Charter
  • Hobgood Charter School

3-Year Renewal

 

CSRB voted to grant the following charter schools a 3-year renewal beginning July 1, 2024:

  • KIPP Halifax College Preparatory
  • The Capitol Encore Academy
  • Carter G. Woodson School
  • Tillery Charter Academy
  • Southwest Charlotte STEM Academy
  • Pocosin Innovative Charter 
  • Steele Creek Preparatory Academy

The following schools will receive a renewal vote in March:

  • Childrens Village Academy
  • Ridgeview Charter School
  • Movement Charter School

Charter School Presentations: 

Six charter schools presented to CSRB per their renewal stipulations:

  • Apprentice Academy High School
  • Monroe Charter Academy
  • Next Generation Academy
  • Rocky Mount Preparatory
  • Z.E.C.A. School of Arts and Technology
  • Paul R. Brown Leadership Academy 

Five CLP charter schools presented information to CSRB regarding thier school improvement efforts:

  • ALA Charlotte
  • Classical Charter Schools of Wilmington
  • Gate City Charter
  • Summit Creek Academy
  • Valor Prep

 


CSRB

Other Business:

  • Wake Forest Charter Academy 4th Graders performed for our CSRB members.
  • Ms. Nicky Niewinski, OCS Consultant, introduced two (2) charter school application amendments as required by G.S. 115C-218.7. Both amendments were approved by the CSRB. Nalanda Academy requested to change their facility location from zip code 27560 to zip code 27604. This location provides Nalanda Academy with an opportunity to open their school in August 2024. Invest Collegiate Imagine requested to update their mission statement to align with the current direction of the school.
  • Ms. Nicky Niewinski, OCS Consultant, presented information regarding the School Improvement workflow implementation process in OCS. 
  • Ms. Susan Brigman, NC DPI Section Chief, Specialty Programs, and Children's Village Academy leadership shared updated information related to Children's Village Academy in preparation for a renewal vote in March. 
  • Ridgeview Charter School leadership shared updated information related to school improvement efforts in preparation for a renewal vote in March. 
  • Ms. Alexis Schauss, NC DPI Chief Financial Officer, Financial and Business Services presented information related to Funding in Arrears. 
  • Mr. Rupen R. Fofaria, Director, Board Operations and Policy, led a discussion around proposed updates to the charter school renewal guidelines.
