NCDPI Press Release | Jan. 16, 2024: NCDPI releases guidance on the use of artificial intelligence in schools - The state guidebook says that AI literacy should be infused into all grade levels and curriculum areas. It also stresses the importance of incorporating AI into the classroom responsibly — using it as a tool to aid in learning.
NCDPI’s Office of Digital Teaching and Learning worked with the organization AI for Education to create a framework for ethically implementing AI. The “EVERY framework” is an acronym that gives guidance to North Carolina public schools for “How to Use AI Responsibly EVERY Time:”
-
EVALUATE the initial output to see if it meets the intended purpose and your needs.
-
VERIFY facts, figures, quotes, and data using reliable sources to ensure there are no hallucinations or bias.
-
EDIT your prompt and ask follow up questions to have the AI improve its output.
-
REVISE the results to reflect your unique needs, style, and/or tone. AI output is a great starting point, but shouldn’t be a final product.
-
YOU are ultimately responsible for everything you create with AI. Always be transparent about if and how you used AI.

State Superintendent Catherine Truitt and NC Sen. Jim Burgin presented Harnett County Schools with a $40,000 grant for Career and Technical Education programs.
Harnett County Schools | January 18, 2024
In an effort to continue to support the construction trades in Career and Technical Education programs and classrooms across NC, the General Assembly allotted $200,000 for the State Superintendent to award to Public School Units (PSUs) via the CTE Grants for Homebuilding Programs. Funding priority was placed on PSUs located, in whole or in part, in a county with at least one local school administrative unit that received low-wealth supplemental funding in the previous fiscal year and that have a high population of at-risk students or students with disabilities. These grants will assist public school units with program costs associated CTE homebuilding programs and costs associated with implementing the U.S. Department of Labor approved Pre-Apprenticeship Certificate Training (PACT) program, developed by the Home Builders Institute.
Superintendent Catherine Truitt said she is “thrilled to present grants for career and technical education programs related to homebuilding to ten school districts across the state, including Harnett County Schools. Using this funding, Harnett County Schools will be able to expand its work-based learning opportunities for students at all four high schools and enhance its programs that connect CTE students with local industry partners who can mentor and eventually hire them. As North Carolina’s population continues to grow, the skills students are learning in these courses are preparing them for jobs that are critical to our state’s workforce. Worldwide, the demand for homebuilders and other professionals in the skilled trades is projected to increase by more than three million in the next five years, making these occupations among the fastest-growing of any industry.”
According to CTE Director Lindsey Hardee, the award from the "Grants for Homebuilding" will supply schools with practice materials and tools necessary to prepare for the 2024 BUILD Harnett event that will be held the week of May 13th-16th at Central Carolina Community College, Harnett Main Campus.
BUILD “Broadening Understanding for Intentional Local Development" Harnett is a work-based learning opportunity with local roots, is operated through Harnett County Business Education Partnership, a 501c(3) serving as our CTE Advisory. The program addresses the deficit of construction trades professionals regionally, prioritizing local business and industry partners.
The event is a platform to educate post-secondary partners, local workforce, and other stakeholders on the tremendous talent HCS CTE students possess. The event also provides an opportunity for our students to learn about the multitude of opportunities, close to home, awaiting them upon completion of their high school CTE architecture and construction pathways.
Thank you, State Superintendent Catherine Truitt, Sen. Jim Burgin, NCDPI CTE Director, Atkins “Trey” Michael and our district leaders for celebrating with us!

United States Capitol Historical Society (capitolhistory.org)
Recently, I was proud to nominate Mitchell Wright, a Social Studies teacher at Watauga High School, for one of only sixteen nationwide seats for the U.S. Capitol Historical Society (USCHS) Civic Education Workshop this spring. This event allows educators from across the country to develop new lesson plans and instructional materials for both middle and high school students on the history and function of the Electoral College. Last week, Mr. Wright was officially selected to participate – a well-deserved opportunity and honor for someone who has dedicated 26 years of his life to teaching.

Since 2005, our “We the People” Constitution Tour has served over 20,000 students in exploring how the U.S. Constitution comes alive in our nation’s capital. This free educational program is designed to engage Title I middle school students with the foundations of the United States government by providing firsthand experiences with the nation’s political landmarks and historical documents. By experiencing history where it happened, students can develop a more profound connection to the content they learn in the classroom.
Our “We the People” tour isn’t just a sightseeing trip – it’s an incredible learning experience that makes history and civic education more accessible and relatable for students.
The submission period for the Purple Star Award is open and will close February 1. Help honor those schools that go above and beyond to demonstrate their commitment to military students and their families by encouraging them to apply.

2024: The Cliff is Coming "Regional Sessions for Continued Recovery"
In response to the upcoming ESSER funding cliff, the Office of Learning Recovery and Acceleration (OLR) will be hosting 10 regional workshops in February focused on new student outcome datasets and utilizing the ESSER Funding Cliff Toolkit. The purpose of these sessions is to provide PSU leaders with relevant information and data around ESSER expenditures and student outcomes as well as resources to understand which ESSER investments were most effective. Session participants will leave with an understanding of how to use a data-driven approach to evaluate investments and make sound budgeting decisions beyond September 2024. Review the draft agenda for more information about sessions and schedule.
Due to site capacity and funding, these sessions are limited to 6 attendees per district and 3 attendees per charter school. Please work with your district or school leaders to assemble a team of key decision makers around ESSER and budgeting. We suggest including at least the CFO, the Federal Programs Director, and Superintendent or designee.
To register to attend a regional event, click here or bit.ly/OLRWinter24. Once you register, you will receive an automated email that contains the address of the session you registered to attend.
If you have any questions, please contact the OLR Project Manager, Jay Johnson, at jay.johnson@dpi.nc.gov or ARP Program Administrator, Dr. Richard Lewis, at Richard.lewis@dpi.nc.gov.
