Monthly Standards Update

In April 2023, the NCDPI ELA Team began review of the current 2017 ELA Standard Course of Study (SCOS). In an effort to keep stakeholders informed during the Review Phase, the NCDPI ELA Team will provide monthly standards updates that contain the latest announcements and current news regarding the ELA SCOS.

*Please note: Literacy Instruction Standards (LIS) monthly updates have been merged with this standards update to consolidate and streamline communication.

These updates will be sent every first Friday of the month.

Current Phases for Standards:

ELA Standard Course of Study (End of Grade/Course Student Expectations): Review Phase
Literacy Instruction Standards (Educator Expectations for Teaching Literacy): Installation Phase

ELA Standard Course of Study (SCOS) Updates

Data Review Committee (DRC) Applications Closed

The ELA Data Review Committee (DRC) application closed on November 30, 2023. Over 100 applications were submitted and will be reviewed as part of the screening and approval process. Applicants selected for the ELA DRC will represent classroom teachers, administrators, and higher education faculty members who will be able to provide varying perspectives and experiences regarding the current standards.

Planning is underway for the initial meeting of the DRC, which will be virtual. The NCDPI ELA Team hopes to confirm DRC members in the coming weeks. The DRC will analyze the data and research collected to make recommendations for revision to the K-12 ELA Standard Course of Study. These recommendations will be used by the ELA Standards Writing Team which will be convened later this school year.

Literacy Instruction Standards (LIS) Update

Coach's Corner

In lieu of the quarterly SCOOP for the 2023-2024 school year, the NCDPI ELA Team is excited to announce the Coach's Corner. The ELA Team partners with the ELA Consultative Committee (ELACC) to provide instructional leadership with this monthly newsletter to support implementation of the Literacy Instruction Standards (LIS). Each Coach's Corner will feature and highlight a component of the LIS. Issues could include applicable PLC activities to guide discussion and planning of the LIS, coaching frames to inspire teacher autonomy and ownership, and voices from the field that speak to the efficacy of the LIS in practice. Issue 6: Discussion and Writing

Across all grade levels, it is imperative that discussion and writing opportunities are intentionally planned for students. Discussion and writing are the forms of output in which learners are able to express their understanding from text and make their thinking visible. When planning for discussion, teachers must set clear expectations for discourse and utilize strong questions that push students to think within and beyond the text. Writing opportunities should engage and support students with analyzing, interpreting, and applying content information through a variety of formats.

**Registration Closing January 12: Teaching the Craft of Writing PD**

The NCDPI ELA Team invites teachers to participate in professional learning on Teaching the Craft of Writing. This one-day PD will be grounded in the Literacy Instruction Standards, ELA Standard Course of Study, current research, and the recommendations and guidance in the NCDPI ELA Team’s writing guidebook (to be released in January 2024). Collectively, participating teachers can use this learning to make informed and effective decisions when developing their vision for teaching writing.

Professional learning will be held face-to-face on the dates, times, and locations below. Participants are encouraged to bring a device.

Virtual: February 29, 2024 | 8:30 AM - 12:30 PM

Please note priority registration will be given to districts attending PD closest to their region.

Spots are limited for the in-person option. Once a location’s registration is full, registrants will be put on a waiting list. Registration is not finalized until registrants receive confirmation from the NCDPI ELA Team. All registrants should receive their confirmation by January 12, 2024.
