NC DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC INSTRUCTION

It's International Education Week!

Global Education remains a priority in North Carolina. At its core, global education is about enabling young people to participate in shaping a better, shared future for the world.

International Education Week (IEW) is a wonderful way for students and educators to come together and celebrate the benefits of education and cultural exchange worldwide. This initiative is a joint effort of the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Department of State, aimed at promoting programs and opportunities that can prepare students for a global environment.

For almost four years, the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction has celebrated IEW by promoting programs and opportunities that prepare students for a global environment, and that also encourage educators and students to increase their global awareness, global competency, and global engagement.

NCDPI IEW Student Showcase

The NCDPI International Education Week Student Showcase is an excellent opportunity for North Carolina students to demonstrate their global competency. Educators can submit images, videos, or samples of student/school:

  • Dance or Musical Performances
  • Presentations
  • Writing
  • Visual or Fine Arts Work
  • Projects
  • Interviews
  • and More!

Approved submissions will be shared on the NCDPI social media pages, website, and International Education Week Hub on Canvas, or invited to be performed live at NCDPI during IEW. All other submissions will be highlighted throughout the year on social media and included in virtual posts and/or reels or posts in celebration of IEW 2024.

Workshop for International Education Week: “Understanding Indigenous Cultures in Local and Global Communities”

Saturday, November 18, 2023, from 10:00 AM- 3:00 PM

The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, in partnership with UNC and Duke Area Studies Centers, is pleased to offer a professional development opportunity as part of International Education Week (IEW) that can help to increase one's global understanding and perspective.

In recognition of National Native American Heritage Month in November, this year’s theme, “Understanding Indigenous Cultures in Local and Global Communities”, connects with indigenous communities across the globe and thinks about how different people around the world understand ideas of indigenous, local, and global cultures, traditions, values, and government.

Expert speakers from UNC-Chapel Hill and beyond will unpack case studies from Latin America, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia that can be deployed to teach North Carolina standards for different K-12 subjects, as well as provide teaching materials that can be used to adapt these topics to the classroom.

Participants will earn 0.5 CEUs for participation in the in-person workshop. Additional CEUs can be earned after attending the PD session.

GEDB- Global Educator Digital Badge- Icon

Did You Know That...?

The Global Educator Digital Badge (GEDB) provides an opportunity for educators to focus their professional development on developing their own global context and understanding of how to integrate global education throughout curricula. It also provides the opportunity to build global competency in students.

For more information on the Badge (SBE Policy, FAQs, Process Flyer, Implementation Guide, MOA), please visit the website or contact NCGlobalEducation@dpi.nc.gov.

Did You Know That...?

The Global Ready designations are for schools and districts that have made the development of global competence and global awareness a regular part of their daily work. The process of achieving the recognition requires that schools and districts demonstrate that they are either PREPARED or MODEL according to the Global Ready rubrics.

For more information, please visit the website or contact NCGlobalEducation@dpi.nc.gov.
