Superintendents and Academic Leaders,
Every student is on a unique career journey, and the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) is committed to preparing students to pursue the postsecondary plans of their choice, regardless of their path – employment, enlistment, or (college) enrollment. I am excited to share that the General Assembly supported our recommendation to require a Career Development Plan (CDP) for every student.*
I advocated for CDPs because I truly believe that they are the key to unlocking a brighter future for so many of our students who think certain careers are unobtainable. CDPs will allow those students to envision and plan for the postsecondary plans of their choice.
To ensure that we have a student-centered approach to career development, NCDPI is seeking participants for the CDP pilot, which will run from January until June 2024. If your PSU would like to participate in the pilot, please complete the Google Form by October 31, 2023.
To be considered for this pilot, the PSU must demonstrate a team approach, including all key staff (principals, career development coordinators, CTE teachers and advisors, school counselors, and possibly nonprofit partners) that provide career and college advising within your district. Additionally, participants should currently offer or require a CDP for students. The goal for the pilot is to learn, scale and replicate your best practices for all PSUs across the state, beginning in the 2024-25 school year. Your teams will be the leaders in best-practices and implementation strategy.
The CDP pilot program will focus on the following three components of a strong career development strategy:
- Current third-party vendor products, district-built products, and hybrid/mix products that could satisfy the requirements for a digital platform, as specified in SL 2023-134. Pilot districts will model exceptional use of your platform(s) delivering the four required components, helping to design a statewide strategy to meet the intent of the law.
- Professional development and/or resources are necessary to support all teachers in delivering exceptional career planning.
- Key roles, responsibilities, and resources available to support students as they develop exceptional career development plans, including curriculum, pathways, work-based learning, and advanced learning opportunities (AP, IB, CTE Concentrator, dual enrollment, and/or CCP) that supports the student's career journey from middle school through graduation, resulting in employment, enlistment or enrollment in post-secondary education.
Thank you so much for considering participation in this vital work and for allowing the agency to learn from you! For more information, view our Q&A here. If you have questions, please contact Trey Michael (CTE), Kristie Van Auken (Workforce), or Kisha Bryant (Student Support Services).
Sincerely,
