As LETRS POCs continue to support LETRS sustainability in their districts, the Office of Early Learning will be offering LETRS POC office hours for support. Representatives from the Office of Early Learning and Lexia will be there to share resources and answer questions.
There is no need to sign up for these sessions. Feel free to just show up at the time that works best for you.

HB 259, Section 7.64, of the 2023 North Carolina Legislative Session prohibits the use of visual memory and three cueing, or the MSV instructional approach, during any instruction or intervention and within curriculum materials.
The guidance document linked below explains what the three-cueing system is and what it can look like during instruction. It clarifies the legislation's effective date, gives the legislative definition of three-cueing, and explains the impact of this legislation on Early Childhood programs, Residential Schools, Local Education Agencies (LEA), Charters, and Educator Prep Programs.
*Additional guidance and support resources for districts to use when sharing this legislation will be shared at the upcoming OEL Regional Meetings held on October 24/25th across the state.

OEL is Still Hiring ELS!
OEL is still hiring Early Literacy Specialists (ELS). Qualified applicants are invited to apply for ELS positions in these PSUs: Brunswick, Harnett, Chapel Hill, Halifax, Hertford, Edgecombe, Washington, Camden, and Currituck. Check the ELS Hires by District Map and share the ELS Job Flyer with interested applicants in your district.

Please read over the 23-24 RtA Portfolio Guidance Clarification document linked below. The clarification document includes considerations when using the portfolio as a pathway and addresses the two passages per week guidance.

The State Board of Education approved Renaissance STAR Reading as the 23-24 Read to Achieve Alternative Assessment. This assessment serves as an alternative pathway for third grade students as a good cause exemption reading proficiency measure. The alternative assessment does not replace the state required assessments and is optional for districts to purchase.
**An Alternative Assessment Informational Webinar invite will go out on October 27th, 2023. This email will come from the vendor, Renaissance, and will go to all current users of STAR and non-STAR customers as well.

The Office of Accountability and Testing will be sending each PSU their DIBELS® 8 BOY data in two separate files to PSU Accountability & Testing Directors/Testing Coordinators by Monday, October 30, 2023. RtA POCs will be notified by email with information about retrieving the files and directions for reviewing the data. A link to the response form will be included.
RtA POCs are asked to review the data and notify the Office of Early Learning regarding the accuracy of the data using the form linked in the notification email by no later than Friday, November 10, 2023. Please submit only one response. If any inaccuracies are reported, the Office of Early Learning will work with you to resolve the discrepancies.

In partnership with NCDPI, Amplify will be offering DIBELS 8 data analysis sessions for school and or district leaders as well as teachers.1.5 hour Zoom sessions will be offered between Oct. 16th and Nov. 2, 2023.
These sessions are designed to support participants in analyzing and creating action plans aligned with the DIBELS 8 beginning of the year data. School leaders will see connections to school planning and teachers will examine the connection to support differentiated core instruction as they set goals for students.

This webinar will explore the functionality of the aggregate reports available to RtA admin roles and or RtA Specialist roles. Join us to brush up on accessing reports and their purpose.

If you were unable to be at AIM and/or attend the ELS POC follow up session held on October 18th, please reach out and we will be glad to offer an individual or small group session to go over the systems check with you. |

Please see the updated Reading Retained Reporting Guidance for the 2023-2024 school year. Information for Pathways to Proficiency for Reading Retained Students and Twice Retained Funding for the 2023-2024 school year has also been included.
Additional note: Please do not change, add, or manipulate the data in the RtA archive table in PowerSchool as this can negatively impact the accuracy of the data for reporting.

DRC Applications
Data Review Committee (DRC) applications are now open through November 30th. We are seeking K-12 educators. K-5 applicants are required to be LETRS trained and are expected to upload their certificates of completion.
Surveys
Surveys for ELA Standards Review have been officially released to the field; All-Stakeholder surveys have been sent out on all communication channels and PSU surveys have been sent to ELA Leaders.
As stated in the NCSCOS Manual, at least 75% of LEAs must respond to the PSU survey before closing. Please encourage ELA Leaders to convene their PSU teams to complete the PSU surveys. View the PSU surveys tally, which shows PSUs in green that have submitted, along with the number of surveys from each district. This tally is updated weekly. Surveys close at 5:00 PM on November 10th.

Second Grade Opinion Writing in Roanoke Rapids
Students in Mrs. Whitt's second grade class at Belmont Elementary School in Roanoke Rapids worked on opinion writing last week. After a pumpkin pie tasting, they used graphic organizers to help them think through their reasons and examples before creating rough drafts and then final drafts of their personal views on pumpkin pie!
