Oral Language Development Matters!
Did you know?
An essential component of Literacy Instruction is Oral Language - speaking and listening. Oral language forms the foundation for literacy; it impacts one’s ability to pronounce words when we read and expands our ability to understand and interpret what’s being read out loud.
Vocabulary gaps amongst children often exist at the start of school, given some young children may have experienced less verbal stimulation, exposure to an extensive range of words, and/or fewer opportunities to use new words in conversation. We need to actively provide language enrichment and growth stimulating experiences to reduce these gaps. Children need a wide variety of experiences and opportunities to engage in meaningful conversations, tell stories, read storybooks, write, and draw.
As educators we must bolster vocabulary by modeling and teaching new words throughout the course of the day, creating a “culture of communication.” Early consistent, and ongoing verbal conversations and engagement with our children will provide enormous dividends to our children’s future language and learning outcomes.
Reading and writing depend on language abilities. By the time we are three years old we can string together simple sentences, but reading fluency takes about 6 years to achieve and is dependent upon your oral language. Oral Language impacts the ability to pronounce words when we read. Oral language expands our ability to understand and interpret what’s being read out loud.
Please join us for our next Literacy for Educators Charter webinar series on Oral Language Development. During this session we will examine the various Layers of Language, Vocabulary Development, and Types of Querying and Questioning.
