The NC Department of Public Instruction needs your feedback and input to improve the validity and reliability of the NC Teacher Working Conditions Survey (NCTWC)! Your participation will help us understand the needs of teachers across the state, improve work environments, and shape policies that directly impact educators and education stakeholders like you.

K-12 English Language Arts (ELA) Standards Review Survey
State Board of Education policy specifies that the NC Department of Public Instruction will formally collect feedback on the current standards from educators, administrators, parents, students, institutions of higher education, business/industry representatives, and other education agencies. The purpose of this survey is to obtain input from educators and stakeholders familiar with the English Language Arts Standard Course of Study in order to inform revision decisions, which may include changes, clarifications, additions, deletions, or replacements to the current standards.
The English Language Arts team requests your thoughtful input and comments on the current academic standards for English Language Arts to inform the review and revision process.
The surveys will close November 10.

NCDPI Accepting Applications for Information and Communications Specialist Position
This position is responsible for helping NCDPI’s Office of Communications and Information Services provide communication support and expertise to the agency’s staff, 115 local public-school districts, including the state’s 2,500+ district public schools and 200+ charter schools. The successful candidate will add capacity in message development and media relations support
Preferred skills:
- Demonstrated experience researching and/or writing and/or editing content for communications materials
- Demonstrated experience working with members of the media. (i.e., reporters, news outlets, news networks, and/or journalists).
- Demonstrated experience in project management.

Smithsonian Libraries and Archives Traveling Trunks Program: Bringing Smithsonian Collections You Can See, Hear and Touch to Learners Near You
Traveling Trunks is a resource-lending program that delivers multimedia library kits packed full of content from across the Smithsonian Institution right to a school or library’s front door. Through touch, tech, sound, and sight, Traveling Trunks creates a screen-free, sensorial-rich environment. The lending program is a month-long, free resource for learners and their educators wherever they are - libraries, schools, museums, community centers, and beyond.

Promoting Innovation in Science and Mathematics Award Applications Close September 29
Burroughs Wellcome Fund supports teaching professionals in their efforts to provide quality hands-on, inquiry-based activities for their students. The Promoting Innovation in Science and Mathematics awards enhance the excitement for STEM in the classroom by providing funds for materials, equipment, and supplies related to the implementation of high-quality curriculum and activities in the classroom.
This award provides up to $3,000 for one year to cover the cost of equipment, materials, and supplies. An additional $1,500 may be requested for professional development related to the implementation of new equipment or the use of materials in the classroom. Awards are made to teaching professionals that hold a professional educator's license to teach in a North Carolina K-12 public school.

UNC System Virtual Open House
The UNC System is hosting its fourth annual Virtual Open House for prospective students, families, and high school counselors to learn more about the 16 UNC System universities.
During the week of October 2, 2023 a series of four virtual sessions will be hosted via Zoom Webinar. Admissions Counselors from each institution will share helpful information about the admissions process and current students from each university will share about their college experience and answer your questions live.

Carteret County Schools’ parent and Beaufort Elementary Principal Charity Clemmons reflects on the growth and confidence her son Brycen achieved in his reading and writing skills last year as a result of the literacy work by district teachers. Jennifer Wilkie, Assistant Principal at Morehead City Primary and former teacher at Beaufort Elementary, talks about how students and teachers dove into the instructional work with excitement and enthusiasm, producing more confident readers and writers.

Governor Visits Principal of the Year: ‘Public Education has Always Been a Driving Force in North Carolina’s Progress’
"Gov. Roy Cooper visited Cedar Ridge Elementary School on Tuesday, delivering school supplies, visiting classrooms, speaking with students and teachers, and talking about the importance of public education with 2023 North Carolina Principal of the Year, Donna Bledsoe.
Cedar Ridge Elementary School is a pre-K through fifth grade school in Lowgap in Surry County. The school has two N.C. Pre-K classrooms.
'Public schools are critical for the progress of our state, and Cedar Ridge Elementary School is helping children grow, learn, and succeed,' Cooper said, according to a press release."

Eight NC Schools Earn National Blue Ribbon Recognition
Eight North Carolina public schools were named National Blue Ribbon Schools for 2023 by U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona. The eight schools are among 353 schools nationwide recognized this year for their overall academic performance or progress in closing achievement gaps.
North Carolina public schools receiving this honor are:
- Beaufort County Early College High School, Beaufort County Schools
- Fairview Elementary School, Buncombe County Schools
Greensboro Academy, Greensboro
- Heyward C Bellamy Elementary School, New Hanover County Schools
- Highland School of Technology, Gaston County Schools
- Jay M. Robinson Middle School, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools
- Lucama Elementary School, Wilson County Schools
- W.R. Odell Elementary School, Cabarrus County Schools
