The Arts in Education Director works with arts organizations, community organizations, schools and school systems, and teaching artists to expand and enhance the quality of arts in education (AIE) through school-based artist residencies, touring performances, workshops, development of curriculum and teaching materials, professional development, and innovative partnerships. The Arts in Education Director is a member of the Arts Learning Team but interacts with all other program areas of the Arts Council, working closely with other staff to assist with the development of educational programming, grant proposals and training opportunities for constituents.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manages the Arts in Education Artist Residency and cARTwheels grant programs, including helping applicants with proposals, recruiting panelists for grant adjudication, monitoring funded programs, and approves final reports.
- Oversees North Carolina’s “Poetry Out Loud Program,” an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation, including the recruitment of schools to participate in the statewide program, the school registration process, logistics for the final statewide competition, and marketing and evaluation.
- Oversees the planning and implementation of an initiative to provide professional development and services to teaching artists in the state.
- Stays informed about national and statewide developments in arts education as well as in the field of education.
- Collaborates with the NC Department of Public Instruction to develop and implement strategies in support of arts educators, other teachers, pre-service teachers, schools, and school systems across the state.

Important updates have been made to the AP® Art and Design Sustained Investigation and Selected Works rubrics and scoring guidelines that take effect with the 2023-24 school year. This change only affects the scoring, with no change to the course or portfolio directions, course framework, or assessed skills.
The AP Art and Design Course and Exam Description (CED) (.pdf/3.54 MB) has been updated with the revised rubrics and scoring guidelines. The CED is available on each course’s portfolio page on AP Central®. You may need to clear your browser history or cache to make sure you have the new version of the CED with “Effective Fall 2023” on the cover.

NCMEA is passionate about helping music teachers do their best work by improving their knowledge and job satisfaction. We know that music teachers in rural settings may face some unique challenges and opportunities. For this reason, we are inviting rural K-12 music teachers to join a FREE, fun, easy, low-stress, and high-reward hybrid Professional Learning Community (PLC) during the 2023-24 school year! We are recruiting K-12 music teachers in rural, public schools from across North Carolina to connect, share, and learn via asynchronous online and live, in-person experiences. Participants must have a current NCMEA membership and space in the PLC will be allotted on a first-come, first-served basis. We anticipate a maximum of 35 participants. Enrollment in the PLC is a commitment for the entire school year, and members are expected to participate to the fullest extent possible in both the virtual and in-person activities. PLC TIMELINE:
- Sept-Oct [Virtual] : Enroll in online Canvas course and begin engaging in asynchronous discussions
- Nov 4 [In person] : Participate in a half-day symposium & dinner at the NCMEA Professional Development Conference. Saturday afternoon, Nov. 4, in Winston-Salem. Some travel reimbursement available.
- Nov-Jan [Virtual] : Continue to engage with dedicated online modules, connecting with teachers in an assigned cohort
- Jan-Apr [In person] : Schedule on-site visits with teacher cohort groups. Some travel reimbursement available.
- Jan-Apr [Virtual] : Continue online engagement and discussions
- Apr or May [Virtual] : Participate in a one-day virtual mini-conference, reflecting on the PLC and sharing with other teachers.

The U.S. Department of Education is seeking student performing artists (such as bands/marching bands, choirs, color guards, dancers, drumlines, poets/spoken word artists, soloists, theatrical performers) currently enrolled in institutions of elementary, secondary, or post-secondary education or accredited trade schools, who exemplify resilience, diversity, and excellence and are interested in showcasing their talent, virtually or in-person, at internal and external Department-hosted events, as well as awards and recognition ceremonies, and professional development trainings that support the Department’s programs, priorities, and initiatives and social media campaigns. No formal training or experience is necessary.
This is an opportunity for student performers to showcase their talent and gain exposure to an appreciative audience invested in education and student success.

AP Music Theory/Music Production

Interested applicants can apply online and feel free to reach out if you have any questions. Career Center music classes are an extension of home high schools in WSFCS. Only open to 11th and 12 grade students, classes are geared towards individual music performance and composition skills. AP Music Theory is an introductory college-level music theory course. Students cultivate their understanding of music theory through analyzing performed and notated music as they explore concepts like pitch, rhythm, form, and musical design. In preparation for the AP Music Theory Exam, students will develop their listening skills, melodic and harmonic dictation, singing, and composition. Music Production I and II students explore, understand, manipulate, and create music and sound through the use of technology. Discover the fundamentals of sound theory and music theory and understand their relationship. Students will work in groups in our recording studios to create projects throughout the year, with particular emphasis on songwriting.
Topics covered: introductory music theory, analog sound, digital recording and editing, virtual instruments, live sound, and pop music composition and performance. Software Platforms: Soundtrap, Logic Pro, Ableton Live. Contact Andrew Craft for more info.
