NCISTE

ISTE Monthly Resource

ISTE has just released a topic guide focused on AI. This is a great resource that can give educators a way to start their journey into better understanding how AI can be leveraged in the classroom.

ISTE CERTIFICATION

ISTE Certification

In alignment with the Goals of the North Carolina Digital Learning Plan, the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction has entered into a partnership with the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE). Part of that partnership is the creation of two cohorts (30 participants per cohort) to work toward becoming an ISTE Certified Educator. This certification will take 14 weeks to complete the professional learning that is prepared by ISTE with an estimate of 40 hours needing to be dedicated to this learning. After the 14 weeks of learning, participants will have six months to work on a portfolio of evidence to submit to ISTE to earn the certification.

It is strongly recommended that those considering this opportunity read through the dates for synchronous meetings and deadlines.

To apply, please fill out the application for ISTE Certification Cohort: Due September 22nd. Applicants will be notified of their acceptance no later than September 25, 2023.

Send any questions to Dr. Ashley McBride, ashley.mcbride@dpi.nc.gov

Beginning of the Year ISTE Resources

ISTE Membership is available to every North Carolina Educator, but many do not know where to start once they activate their membership. Please feel free to share this flier with your teachers at the beginning of the school year sharing some high/leverage resources including a free ebook, an introduction to the updated Digital Learning Competencies, webinars, and resources for teaching students about AI.

If you have any questions about your ISTE memberships or need support around these resources, contact Dr. Ashley McBride (ashley.mcbride@dpi.nc.gov).

COSN

CoSN CETL Course

As part of the North Carolina Digital Learning Initiative, NCDPI is partnering with the North Carolina Consortium of School Networking (NC COSN) to provide a 2-day immersion course to prepare North Carolina’s Digital Teaching and Learning Leaders for the Certified Education Technology Leaders (CETL) Exam.

The CETL is the first-ever aspirational certification for education technology leaders. It is based on a body of knowledge defining the skill areas critical to today’s education technology leaders: leadership and vision; understanding the educational environment; and managing technology and support resources. Specifically, the CETL is a rigorous, two-part exam that identifies those who have mastered the framework skills and knowledge needed to bring 21st century skills to schools. To sit for this exam, candidates must have a minimum of a bachelor's degree plus four (4) years of education technology experience.

The exam will be delivered at NCTIES on March 6th at 8:00am.

The 2-day immersion course will be held on Friday, December 1 and Saturday, December 2 (Location TBD)

Through funding from the NC Digital Learning Initiative, NCDPI will be able to provide this course free of charge for the participants. This course would normally cost $849 dollars per person. For the school year 2022-2023, we can accept up to 40 new participants. Any person taking the course must also sign up and pay for the exam at NCTIES. The cost for the exam at NCTIES will be:

  • CoSN Member exam fee: $489 (Every PSU in North Carolina has access to CoSN Membership)
  • Member exam retake fee: $339

Registration will be first-come, first-serve up to 40 participants, with only 1 opening per district. If less than 15 people sign up for the course, the course will not be offered.

If you are interested, please fill out this registration form.

If you have any questions, please contact Dr. Ashley McBride ashley.mcbride@dpi.nc.gov

DTL Leaders’ Meeting at NCSLMA Conference

The NC Department of Public Instruction's Office of Digital Teaching and Learning, in partnership with the NC School Library Media Association (NCSLMA), is facilitating a meeting for district level and charter technology and library media leaders on Thursday, October 5, 2023, at the NCSLMA Conference. In keeping with NCSLMA's conference theme, "The Magic Happens Here," we will learn how several districts are "magically" transforming their spaces and programming. Join us to learn about how Guilford County Schools is evaluating its library spaces, how Davie County Schools has leveraged a DLI grant to transform learning in its spaces, how Duplin County Schools is impacting student learning through makerspaces, and how Moore County Schools is engaging students through robotics and engineering. Additionally, NCDPI DTL leadership will provide state level updates. We hope you are looking forward to this opportunity for us to share with and learn from each other. Mark your calendars and plan to network with other library media and technology leaders from across the state at this fabulous conference!

Intended Audience: Charter and District Level Library and Technology Leaders

nc edcloud

PreK - 5th Grade Alternate Authentication in NCEdCloud

The NCEdCloud team is planning two changes to the existing PreK through 5th grade Alternate Authentication feature in NCEdCloud.

Currently, this is an opt-in feature. PSUs must request that it be enabled. When opting in, PSUs may select one of three options for each grade level PreK - 5:

  • Default: Students use username/password only.
  • QR Code: Students can use username/password or scan a printed QR code provided by a teacher or administrator.
  • Pictograph: Students enter their username, then select 3 pictographs in place of a password. Students must use their pictograph; they cannot use a traditional password.

We are working to make two significant changes to this feature:

  1. QR Codes will be enabled by default for all PSUs in grades PreK through 5. If PSUs choose not to print QR codes, students will still be able to sign in with their existing usernames and passwords.
  2. The Pictograph option will no longer be offered due to low use and lack of interest statewide.

We anticipate these changes to be implemented by mid-October 2023. If your PSU has not previously opted-in and would like to enable QR codes ahead of this change, an LEA Administrator may opt-in using the existing form on the NCEdCloud website. If you have any questions or concerns about these changes, please email john.mairs@dpi.nc.gov. Thank you!
