Charter Schools Review Board Highlights

 

September 11-12, 2023

CSRB Basics

  • CSRB meetings are streamed live every month on the DPI Youtube page
  • Meeting agendas are posted to Eboard approximately a week prior to each meeting. 
  • The next regularly-scheduled CSRB meeting is October 17-18 at the DPI Building in Raleigh. 
  • CSRB member lists, previous minutes, and other information is housed on the OCS web page

September Applicant Interviews

Accelerated Applicants

The Charter Schools Review Board reviewed the accelerated application for Warren Young Explorers School. The CSRB unanimously voted to not approve their application.

 

Standard Applicants

The Charter Schools Review Board heard from four standard timeline applicants in September. These applicants were seeking approval to open in Fall 2025. The CSRB recommended Carolina Achieve, Triad International Studies Academy and Liberty Charter Academy (American Traditional Academies) return for a Round Two interview to be held this November or December. The CSRB voted to deny Highlands Charter Academy's application. 

 

All submitted 2023 charter applications are available in the Office of Charter Schools section of the NC DPI web site.

 


Reports

 

Ms. Ashley Baquero, OCS Director, shared several updates with the Review Board including the introduction of two new OCS Consultants and how the OCS workflows have been restructured to maximize effectiveness. Ms. Baquero also presented the updated 2023 calendar of CSRB meetings along with the 2024 proposed CSRB meeting calendar. Both calendars were approved unanimously. 

 

The CSRB also welcomed their newest member Mr. Alex Quigley. 

 

 


AIM

Other Business 

  • Ms.Nicky Niewinksi presented requests from Neuse Charter School and Casa Esperanza Montessori Charter School to amend their mission statement. Both amendment requests were approved unanimously. 
  • Ms. Jenna Cook, OCS Consultant, presented revised charter renewal guidelines that align 10-year and non-renewal with legislation and further clarifies information that can be used when determining 3, 5, or 7-year renewals. The CSRB unanimously approved the guidelines as presented. 
  • Monroe Charter and Rocky Mount presented their school improvement plans to CSRB per SBE renewal stipulations. Both plans were approved unanimously. 
  • The 2nd Annual AIM Conference will be held at the Raleigh Convention center October 9-11. Additional information, including registration and agenda can be found on the DPI web site
