Happy Arts In Education Week!

Arts In Education Week Proclamation

In celebration of Arts in Education Week, Sept. 10-16, the Department of Public Instruction will showcase the Hoke County High School Marching Band performing on Halifax Mall.

The band will perform their half-time show Sept. 12 at 11:30 a.m. on the Halifax Lawn. Please come show support for these students and the hard work they put in to mastering the NC Music Education Standards.

The Hoke County High School band program has been led by Devon Pickett since 2015. Currently, the  band program offers the following student ensembles: Jazz Ensemble, Concert Band/ Symphonic Band/ Wind Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, Woodwind Quintet, Brass Ensemble and The Marching Band. During the last the years, the band program has strived to reach new heights, traveling to almost every major university across North Carolina and performing as the opening act as well as traveling throughout the East Coast, gaining valuable performance experiences.

In 2010, Congress passed House Resolution 275 designating the week beginning with the second Sunday in September as National Arts in Education Week. During this week, the field of arts education joins together in communities across the country to advocate, educate and celebrate the impact and transformative power of the arts in education.

North Carolina's Vision for Comprehensive Arts Education

In today's globally competitive world, innovative thinking and creativity are essential for all school children. High quality, standards-based instruction in the arts develops these skills and effectively engages, retains, and prepares future-ready students for graduation and success in an entrepreneurial economy. Dance, music, theatre arts, and visual arts, taught by licensed arts educators and integrated throughout the curriculum, are critical to North Carolina's 21st century education.
