2023 CLTA - NC Annual Conference

Saturday, September 9 in Chapel Hill

The 2023 CLTA-NC (Chinese Language Teachers Association of North Carolina) Annual Conference will be held in person at the FedEx Global Education Center at UNC-Chapel Hill from 10:00 am – 5:30 pm EST on Saturday, September 9, 2023. The theme for this year’s conference is Join Hands to Create a Sustained Journey of Chinese Language Learning: Articulation and Cooperation of Multi-mode K-16 Chinese Language Programs in NC

K-12 Global Education Symposium

Thursday, October 5 in Chapel Hill

The 2023 UNC World View K-12 Global Education Symposium: Indigenous Cultures, Peoples, and Places will explore the meaning of global Indigeneity while examining the complexities of Indigenous identity and life. There will be discussions about the commonalities among the world’s Indigenous and Native peoples, as well as what makes them profoundly diverse and different from one another. Some of the topics that may be examined include local and global issues impacting Indigenous individuals, communities, peoples, and governance; Indigenous languages and language preservation; sovereignty and self-determination; cultural resilience; and respecting ancestral lands, waters, and territories.

The 57th Annual Foreign Language Association of North Carolina (FLANC) Fall Conference has the theme: Advocate, Collaborate, and Celebrate! Registration includes 3 pre-conference webinars, general sessions, scavenger hunt activities at the exhibit hall, continental breakfast and 2 lunches during the conference dates, and the Allied group business meetings on Sunday, October 8.

Heritage Languages SIG Webinar

Thursday, September 7 at 5:00 - 6:00 pm

The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) has established Special Interest Groups (SIGs) to provide continuous networking and information sharing on a specific topic or area of interest. The Heritage Languages SIG, which represents the concerns of the heritage languages teaching community, will be hosting a 1-hour webinar on Thursday, September 7, titled, "The Triple Bullying of U.S. Heritage Speakers and How To Counter It.

World View Global Ed 101

K-8 Program: Global Education 101

Thursday, September 14 at 4:00 - 5:30 pm

World View to You! Global Education 101 is one of UNC World View’s 2023-2024 virtual outreach programs for K-8 educators. UNC World View’s experts in the global education arena will meet with educators, offering an opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of global competencies and providing frameworks for integrating global themes in all disciplines.

 

This program is fully funded by the NC Department of Public Instruction (DPI), and there is no fee to educators, but registration is required.

Rentrée Share-a-thon

Saturday, September 16 at 11:00 am - noon

The American Association of Teachers of French (AATF) will kick off with the back-to-school Share-a-thon on Saturday, September 16 at 11:00 am ET/10:00 am CT/9:00 am MT/8:00 am PT/ 6:00 am HT. This webinar is free and anyone can register using the Zoom form.

Building Confidence in World Language Learners

Wednesday, September 27 at 6:30 - 7:30 pm

The North Carolina Virtual Public School (NCVPS) 2023-2024 Digital Transition Webinar Series for Educators offers new webinar topics based on participant requests, with the addition of a monthly World Language focus. In September, Sarah Boutin, NCVPS Japanese teacher, will be presenting, "Building Confidence in World Language Learners" for Japanese or Digital Learning credit.

Foundational Series 2023

Saturday sessions at 11:00 am - 2:30 pm

The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) is offering three half-day virtual workshops (via ACTFLearn Central and Zoom) on ACTFL fundamentals, which are designed for beginning educators or those new to proficiency-based teaching. Participants can register for 1, 2, or all 3 workshops:

  • Foundations of the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines on October 14
  • Foundations of the World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages on October 21
  • Foundations of the NCSSFL-ACTFL Can-Do Statements on October 28

 

Attending each virtual workshop in its entirety (including completing the post-workshop tasks on the LMS) equates to 4 hours of professional development. Completing all three workshops in the series equates to 12 hours of PD. After registering, additional details about joining the ACTFLearn Central course for the workshop and accessing the Zoom meeting will be sent to participants several days prior to the workshop date.

The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) has a number of opportunities for educators, including stipends for attendees at the annual convention. Please see the details and deadlines below.

Annual Convention Stipend Applications

Due Wednesday, September 13

ACTFL sponsors the First-Time Attendee Stipend Award program to provide financial assistance in the amount of $500 to registrants for the upcoming conference, and individuals who have never attended an ACTFL Annual Convention & World Languages Expo are invited to apply.

 

ACTFL particularly encourages new teachers in their first three years of teaching to apply, as well as individuals who are members of historically underrepresented groups, and educators working at Title I institutions and/or with a demonstrated financial need.

 

Applicants must:

  • Be a member of ACTFL valid through November 30, 2023, at the time the application is submitted.
  • Be registered for the Full Convention at the time the application is submitted.
  • Not have previously attended an ACTFL Convention.

Note: New teacher applicants must submit proof with their application that they are within the first three years of their teaching career.

World View Global Fellows Program

World View Global Fellows Applications

Due Wednesday, September 20

The UNC World View 2023-2024 Global Fellows Program, We’re Still Here: Exploring Indigenous Cultures, is an intensive, eight-month interdisciplinary professional learning opportunity that deepens educators’ understanding of the culture, history, and contemporary life of Indigenous communities in North Carolina and throughout the world. Fellows who successfully complete all program requirements and meet announced deadlines will be eligible for up to 5.0 CEUs or 50 hours of professional learning and a stipend of $750.

 

Fellows are expected to attend in-person and virtual programming, engage in curriculum support sessions and peer discussions, and complete a series of tasks, as well as develop one comprehensive lesson plan that engages K-12 and early/middle college students in learning about global Indigeneity.

 

North Carolina K-12 and early/middle college educators teaching in any discipline are invited to apply by September 20, 2023.

K-12 Beginning Teacher Scholarship Applications

Due Friday, September 22

The Foreign Language Association of North Carolina (FLANC) awards scholarships for the Fall Conference to beginning teachers in their 1st, 2nd, or 3rd year of teaching (K-12). These scholarships fully reimburse the $95 Beginning Teacher conference registration fee and also include a ticket to one 3-hour workshop at no cost ($35 value).

 

The 2023 FLANC Fall Conference will be held October 7 - 8 in Winston-Salem, and will give beginning teachers an invaluable opportunity to learn new ideas to bring back to their classrooms and mingle with other language teachers.

 

Recipients of the K-12 Beginning Teacher scholarships will be selected from entries of those who apply, and all World Language teachers, including DL/I teachers, are eligible to submit the online application form if they are in their first 3 years of teaching in North Carolina.

Global Ready Schools Planning Institute

October 2 - 6 at Ocracoke

Is your school interested in using the NC Global-Ready Schools Implementation Rubric for school improvement or to receive the NC Global-Ready Schools designation? During this NCCAT planning institute, schools will review the attributes of the rubric, consider what each attribute means in the context of their individual school, assess the school’s readiness, draft a strategic plan and develop next steps for school improvement or to apply for the NC Global-Ready Schools designation.

 

The institute will include whole group discussion to learn from best practices across the state and individual school team planning. School teams of three to five (including a required administrator) should attend. Schools which currently have a Global focus or have previously applied for the NC Global-Ready Schools designation but did not receive it will benefit the most from this institute.

Stevens Initiative

Virtual Exchange Grant Competition

Due Thursday, October 26

The Stevens Initiative has announced its 2023 Virtual Exchange Grant Competition, which will award funding to nonprofit organizations and educational institutions for the design and implementation of innovative virtual exchange programs connecting young people in the United States (U.S.) and Middle East and North Africa (MENA).

 

The aim is to fund a diverse portfolio of virtual exchange program topics, prioritizing programs featuring digital literacy and combating misinformation, climate and the environment, language learning and practice, and civic engagement. This year, there will be three grant types (established, mid-size, and seeding) with varying individual award sizes, from $100,000 - $900,000, supported by the J. Christopher Stevens Virtual Exchange Initiative (JCSVEI).
