Reading Retained Reporting Guidance

Message from The Office of Early Learning

Please see the updated Reading Retained Reporting Guidance for the 2023-2024 school year. Information for Pathways to Proficiency for Reading Retained Students and Twice Retained Funding for the 2023-2024 school year has also been included.

Additional note: Please do not change, add, or manipulate the data in the RtA archive table in PowerSchool as this can negatively impact the accuracy of the data for reporting.

RTA Label Removal

5th Grade Student RTA labels

NCDPI will be running a script to remove the RTA label for 5th graders in all PSU PowerSchool instances. If PSUs are still seeing 5th grade students with the flag after Sept 3rd, please submit a case to PowerSchool Support for assistance.

PSUs can run the sqlReport Students with Retained Reading Code (RRED) to review the students in their PSU with the label, and to ensure the label has been removed from all students once the script has been run.

Proper NC procedure for Transferring and Enrolling Students

As our PSUs gear up for the beginning of the year, NCDPI would like to remind PSUs of the available NC specific Enrollment and Transfer QRDs on our DPI site. The below QRDs, and more, can be found under the NCDPI Help Documents linked in your PowerSchool instance.

Proper transfer & enroll

To ensure proper procedure and protocol is followed, including but not limited to no-show procedures, when enrolling and transferring, please reference the following QRDs.

Please submit a case to PowerSchool Support for technical assistance needs in PowerSchool with enrolling or withdrawing students.

For attendance policy questions including but not limited to, ten day rule, no shows, and remote instruction days, please reference the SASA Manual found on the DPI site under Student Accounting.

Advanced Math Course (AMC) legislation update

The Advanced Math Course (AMC) legislation requires that any student who has demonstrated the highest level of mastery in the previous school year accesses advanced mathematics instruction the following year. The legislation also requires NCDPI to annually collect and report the number and demographic information for all students who are eligible for advanced math courses and whether or not those students are then placed in advanced math courses as required.  Please remember that this legislation does not prohibit you from placing other students into advanced math courses.

In the 2023-24 school year, with the introduction of the AP Precalculus course, the PowerSchool AMC report has been updated to include this new course as an advanced course, and students enrolling in the new course will be counted appropriately in the AMC report.

Visit the Advanced Mathematics Course (AMC) Enrollment Legislation | NC DPI website to find the following resources to support implementation of the AMC legislation:

  • A pre-recorded video resource is available to overview the legislation and review frequently asked questions.

  • Links to join ‘live’ Office Hours, beginning in September.

  • Updated course code list for the 2023-24 AMC report

For other questions, please contact Stephanie Cyrus, at stephanie.cyrus@dpi.nc.gov or (984) 236-2742, with the Office of Advanced Learning and Gifted Education at NCDPI.

Calendar

2023-24 Home Base Maintenance Periods

Each year, a list of scheduled maintenance windows are published by NCDPI. This is published in advance to help teachers and administrators better prepare for temporary outages and loss of access.  Please review the 2023-2024 maintenance schedule and put these dates on your calendar. In most cases, the entire window is not necessary and we can return systems to service earlier than listed. If emergency maintenance is required in addition to these scheduled dates, all users will be notified in advance.
