State Superintendent of Public Instruction Catherine Truitt told guests at the Rocky Mount Area Chamber of Commerce Power Breakfast that American education has been in decline since the 1980s. Truitt said the slide in education could be best understood with the adage, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” Reading is at the center of her three-prong approach of getting students ready for life after high school, with the other elements being reform and readiness.

Grant Opportunities for Teachers and School Employees
Do you have field trip ideas for the upcoming school year but have little to no funding? Could your school benefit from an outdoor structure that allows students to learn and engage in activities outside?
Thanks to funding from the N.C. General Assembly, Go Outside Grants are now available through the N.C. Youth Outdoor Engagement Commission to support outdoor educational field trips and the construction of outdoor gardens, greenhouses and trails.
In 2019, The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction launched the Purple Star Award Designation initiative to recognize the state’s strong military presence and its support for military families. The Purple Star designation is awarded to schools that demonstrate military-friendly practices and a commitment to military students and families.
2023-2024 Purple Star Applications open on September 1, 2023.
Applications are due no later than February 1, 2024.

This school year in particular, she is looking for creative solutions to education’s biggest challenges: transportation issues, personnel shortages, the ESSER funding cliff, learning acceleration and recovery, and pre-K barriers, to name a few.
